Hello CBMers!!! Another TOP FOURS article from the West. This one attempts to rank those actors from the world of comedy who've done a stellar job playing a superhero.
"Life literally abounds in comedy if you just look around."
-Mel Brooks
What's the best choice to play that courageous, inspiring, and endearing symbol of heroism? Why, a comedian of course. Not every big name hero out there, but for the most part? Yeah, comedic actors regularly put in great performances as superheroes. It's surprising to see actors, who've cut their teeth in comedies and romantic comedies, give such charismatic and charming performances as some of Earth's mightiest heroes. What's that you say? Hasn't every actor, even Oscar winning super serious dramatic actors done some kind of comedy project? This is mostly true, but there are those select few who seem to find a better balance of genuine charisma and natural humor within the genre of comedy. And comedy aligns rather well in comic book movies, Spiderman can be a jokester and there's even an anti-hero named The Comedian. Also though, that doesn't always mean that a comedian will instantly make a good superhero. (think Seth Rogen in Green Hornet) And while they're not comedians in the standup mold, these are actors recognized for their talented comedic abilities. With that in mind, this ranking will take a look at some of those actors of significant comedic talent and how well they've represented a superhero on the big screen.
4) Ryan Reynolds
Reynolds got his first big break on the sitcom Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place. He then made the transition to movies through comedies, finding cult success with the film Van Wilder. Some of his bigger hits came with romantic comedies, such films as Just Friends and The Proposal. Reynolds though certainly has developed into a versatile actor, starring in various genre films from horror to action. But it seems as if the CBM genre has taking a shine to him, as he has appeared in several such films. Not sure if that would be considered a highlight for him though, most of his CBMs are poorly received and don't perform so well at the box office. Nevertheless, he still has put in solid performances in those roles. Although the character of Deadpool ended up being very lackluster in X-Men Origins; the potential Reynolds displayed as Deadpool has many fans clamoring for a Deadpool spinoff movie. As Hal Jordan, he gave a charming and suitable performance. Green Lantern suffered from far greater deficiencies than Reynolds' acting.
3) Chris Evans
Evans' big breakthrough came in the comedy spoof film, Not Another Teen Movie. His performance in that movie showcased his great comedic instincts. His early career is littered with a couple of comedic roles, but early on he transitioned to action. Like Reynolds, Evans has walked down the CBM path several times. Playing big name characters and showing up in the smaller scaled CBMs as well. Even within those CBMs he has often played the more comedic character. In Fantastic Four, he was the fun, free wheeling Human Torch, who is commonly recognized as the humorous one of the group. His true calling in the world of CBMs came with his excellent portrayal of Steve Rogers, Captain America. He encapsulated Captain America very well, his portrayal was earnest, genuine, and had just the right amount of dashing. Evans had a subtle commanding presence which has proven more suitable for the MCU, particularly in The Avengers. By April, Evans will have donned the stars and stripes of Captain America four times, successful portrayal defined.
2) Michael Keaton
By all accounts the precedent of comedic star playing superhero was set by Keaton. Even his casting in Batman was met with backlash because he was seen as a comedy actor. Before Batman, Keaton was mostly identified with the joke spouting ghost of Beetlejuice. Films like Mr. Mom and Night Shift comprised his early career, making him ideal for comedic roles. Batman is a character defined by brooding and physical intimidation, not easily imagined being played by the guy from The Dream Team. Yet, Keaton succeeded, winning generally positive acclaim by many. He conveyed Bruce Wayne's inner turmoil and emotional disconnect. His Batman was intimidating and driven, aided by the rubber suit that enhanced Keaton's physical image. Keaton continued his Batman performance in the sequel but opted out of the Bat suit after that film's mediocre reception.
1) Robert Downey Jr
If Keaton paved the road, then Downey drove a Lexus down the path. Downey was a former SNL cast member and even starred alongside comedy legend Rodney Dangerfield. He had much success in romantic comedies from Soapdish to Chances Are. He was even a member of the 80's 'Brat Pack' with films like The Pick Up Artist, Johnny Be Good, and Weird Science. He had a very reputable career displaying outstanding acting chops. And would attain a whole new level of stardom with his turn as Tony Stark in Iron Man. The role he seemed created for, Downey made Tony a fun and sardonic character, that finds perfect harmony between enthusiasm and grounded emotion. And he was still able to handle the more complex inflections of the role as well. A mega financial successful Iron Man trilogy and The Avengers prove that Downey captured the essence of Tony Stark in stellar fashion. Marvel seemed to think so also, making him one of the highest paid actors for playing one character. Yet he still dips his toe in comedy, giving an Oscar nominated performance in the comedy Tropic Thunder.
If there's anything to take away from this ranking, it's that the potential for the castings of Paul Rudd and Chris Pratt are sky high. The two definitely fit the mold of this rankings.
Thanks for reading and take care CBMers.
