RED Director To Helm DIVERGENT Sequel
Deadline is reporting that Robert Schwentke, who directed the comic book movie sleeper-hit Red, has been hired by Summit Entertainment to helm their Divergent sequel. Thoughts?
Summit Entertainment has hired Robert Schwentke to direct the sequel to Divergent, which will be called Insurgent. Schwentke, should be quite familiar to most of us as he has directed two comic book movies in the past, Bruce Willis' Red (2010) and Ryan Reynolds' R.I.P.D. (2013). Divergent, which stars Shailene Woodley ("The Amazing Spider-Man 2"), is the first of a planned trilogy. The films are based on the novels written by Veronica Roth. The script for Insurgent is currently being written by Akiva Goldsman based on a draft by Brian Duffield. Insurgent will land in theaters March 20, 2015. Why isn't Divergent director Neil Burger directing the sequel? Well, according to Summit post-production on Divergent will overlap pre-production on Insurgent. Summit wants to whip out the sequel as fast as they can, and can't wait around for the first film to be complete to start planning the second.
The story is set in a future where people are divided into distinct factions based on their personalities. Tris Prior (Woodley) is warned she is Divergent and will never fit into any one group. When she discovers a conspiracy to destroy all Divergents, she must find out what makes being Divergent so dangerous before it's too late.
DIVERGENT is directed by Neil Burger (Limitless), and is based on a best-selling book series by Veronica Roth. The cast includes: Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Kate Winslet, Ray Stevenson, Mekhi Phifer, Maggie Q, Jai Courtney, Zoe Kravitz, Ashley Judd and Miles Teller. It's set to hit theaters on March 21st, 2014.
