ALIEN: Cailee Spaeny Set To Play The Lead In New Movie From DON'T BREATHE Director Fede Alvarez

We found out earlier this year that 20th Century Studios and Hulu were in the process of developing a new Alien movie with Fede Alvarez (Don't Breathe; Evil Dead) on board to write and direct, and the project has now found its lead.

According to THR, up-and-coming Mare of Easttown actress Cailee Spaeny (The Craft: Legacy; Pacific Rim: Uprising) is set to star. No details on her character were provided, but there's already speculation that she might be playing an older take on Newt from James Cameron's Aliens.

Newt was killed-off in Alien 3, but the character was going to be brought back alongside Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) and Hicks (Michael Biehn) for Neill Blomkamp's now defunct movie, which would have served as a direct sequel to Aliens.

While there is always a chance this film will be connected to the previous instalments in the franchise, it is being described as a reboot. Either way, it's probably safe to assume that it won't continue the divisive plotlines that played out in Ridley Scott's Prometheus and Alien: Covenant.

Scott will produce under his Scott Free banner, however. Apparently, the legendary filmmaker was intrigued by an idea Alvarez pitched him on a few years ago, and called him out of the blue last year to see if he had any interest in developing it.

Hulu is also working on an Alien TV series with Noah Hawley (Fargo; Legion) that's expected to premiere at some point over the next two years. Whether both projects will be linked in any way remains to be seen.

God i hope this movie goes back to the basics like Alien and Aliens. This franchise needs a fresh take. Just look at what Prey did for the Predator franchise. I hope they get it together and make another great Alien movie because i'm a sucker for this franchise but it needs alot of work. Hoping for the best

@MotherGooseUPus -

Weyland-Yutani strong arming Amanda Ripley to work for them and find out what happened to her mother, but discovering the Xenomorph’s instead. Straightforward chaos ensues.

The story is right there and has been for years.

Hope it is good as Prey. After Aliens, the franchise was an express elevator to hell, going down

Just make a good movie.

I always wanted a Colonial Marines series of movies. Showing them encountering other alien life aside from Xenomorphs. Although those could be in one of them.

But we already know other aliens live in the original 2 movies. We Know the Engineers are out there and we know Arcturians are a thing. (It doesn't matter when it's Arcturian!)

@CorndogBurglar - It's funny because the line about the Arcturians was just a throw away joke line showing the Marines razzing each other, and yet it means so much.
Yes- they must have encountered at least one other extra terrestrial species, and yet no one has ever went back to explore what exactly the Arcturians were. (I Haven't read all the comics so maybe someone did, correct me if I'm wrong)

Also during the mission briefing, they refer the job as a "bug hunt" meaning they have either had missions looking for possible hostile life forms or they have already encountered some lesser species that didn't pose much of a threat since they seemed kind of bored by the prospect of doing another big hunt.

@mdwilliamson24 - Yep, exactly. I've actually never looked to see if Arcturians were ever mentioned again or shown. With all the comics and novels you would think someone would have thought to explore that a little.

The thing about the Bug Hunt line is that they almost sound annoyed by it. Like they've been on missions looking for lesser aliens but never found anything. Or, like you said, maybe they did but they were a non-threat. Because they seemed completely unprepared for the massive threat of the Xenos.

I trust Alvarez, his Evil Dead is very underrated.

I don’t know about Newt, but I think she’d do a great Amanda Ripley if they wanna adapt Alien: Isolation.

@OptimusPrime114 - I commented this exact thing before I saw your comment, but I looked up Isolation and had no idea they did that story in a game.

That story has been there since Aliens and it’s mind boggling they haven’t used it yet. Now is the time.

"She might be playing an older take on Newt"

Newt died as a child offscreen (a horrible decision imo) along with Hicks in Alien 3, so how could she return as an adult?
I know there is cloning technology in the world of Alien, and that clone could grow to adulthood, but of course, a clone is NOT the same person, nor does it share any memories or experiences of the person it is replicated from.

Seems like just another unnecessary weak fan bait move from creatively bankrupt Hollywood.

@Feralwookiee - Well they would need to disregard Alien 3 completely, which is what Neill Blomkamp was planning to do.

Disney buying Fox might have just been the greatest thing to ever happen to the Alien and Predator franchises.
TCronson
TCronson - 11/17/2022, 10:21 AM
@TheUnworthyThor - more like the worst thing that could ever happen to those franchises, especially Alien. Instead of big budget theatrical films directed by A-list director we get cheap direct-to-VOD B-movie and piece of shit TV series that already sounds awful, it's just another nail in the coffin of already dead franchise.

My only hope for Alien right now.. no more existential human thesis but just more xenomorph petting some humans for a nice meal with great visuals.

Something like Alien : Isolation would be nice

I will bet any amount of money that she is absolutely NOT an adult Newt and opening that can of worms ignoring Alien 3 and trying to go that route.

Instead I can almost guarantee she’s playing Amanda Ripley, whom Weyland-Yutani convinces to work for them and discover what happened to her mother, encountering the Xenomorph’s on the way.

The story has been right there for years.
kg8817
kg8817 - 11/17/2022, 11:59 AM
@kg8817 - adding to my comment I had no idea the alien isolation game adapted that story, but I still think that’s the way to go. Those 55 years between Alien and Aliens are the easiest way to get back into the universe and get back to basics without bringing back Ellen or recasting.
