Ridley Scott Claims He Saved Alien Franchise As He Prepares To Take Over From Fede Álvarez

Ridley Scott has boldly declared that he saved the Alien franchise after Alien: Resurrection "killed it," and takes credit for bringing the Xenomorphs back with 2012's Prometheus.

Sir Ridley Scott divided opinions last week when he declared that he was returning to the Alien franchise to take over from Fede Álvarez, after the Evil Dead helmer's "okay" Alien: Romulus. The plan now is to shift the spotlight back to Michael Fassbender's android, David.

The creator of the Xenomorphs was front and centre in 2012's Prometheus and its 2017 sequel, Alien: Covenant. Álvarez reportedly wanted to use the character in his next Alien movie, which prompted Scott to pull rank and return.

In a new interview (via SFFGazette.com), Scott has credited himself with saving the Alien franchise. After helming 1979's Alien, he allowed James Cameron to take charge of 1986's Aliens. From there, Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection both disappointed in the 90s before the Xenomorphs found themselves battling Predators in a couple of disappointing crossovers.

"I did the best one by far," Scott declared, referring to Alien. "Full stop. End of the f***ing story. Then they let it die. After [Alien] 4, they killed it. So I sat there thinking, 'I’m going to bring it back.' So I sat down with a very good writer; two guys [and] eventually ended up with Damon Lindelof, and we caught fire and wrote Prometheus."

While many fans argue that Aliens is the better movie, the filmmaker continued, "So I suddenly bring [it] back where it all began. Then I thought that shook the cage a bit and I did the next one, Alien Covenant. So now it’s up and running."

Alien did need help in the late 2000s, and Prometheus made a solid $403.4 million worldwide. However, Alien: Covenant was deemed a flop, grossing only $240.9 million.

Neither movie received reviews as positive as those for Alien: Romulus, Alien, Aliens, and Alien: Earth, though Scott seems to be taking credit for all of those, too. He is the franchise's creator, but fans remain divided about potentially revisiting that prequel timeline.

Alien Resurrection, starring Sigourney Weaver and Winona Ryder, made only $161.4 million and was panned by critics. In 2005, writer Joss Whedon said, "It wasn’t so much that they’d changed the script — it’s that they just executed it in such a ghastly fashion as to render it almost unwatchable."

Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet, meanwhile, has said, "I was a little bit concerned to watch my film – maybe I won’t like it? No, it was great! I have a lot of shots that I love. For the people who don’t like it, I can say, 'F*** you!'"

@BruceWayng - Lindelof is a better and more trustworthy creator than Ridley Scott who is a washed hack (Lindelof is washed as well tbf)

Glad its moving away from Romulus but for the love of f**k, don't bring back Lindelof.

The Lindelof script rewrite is where that movie ended up sucking. Lindelof is a hack. The Jon Spaihts og script was amazing. It tied into the og alien perfectly and could've gone on another direction in the sequel. But the hack Lindelof had to [frick] it up.

@ModernAudience - As I understand it, it was actually Ridley Scott who wanted the script changed so as not to connect it with the original and leave room for more inbetweenquels.
ModernAudience
ModernAudience - 9/2/2026, 6:31 PM
@Patient2670 - which apso shows you how dumb Scott is. They kept everything that made it seem like it was connected. Dan O'Bannon was the real reason Alien was any good script wise. He should get more credit than he does.

@ModernAudience - I'm actually a huge Ridley Scott fan. I think when he's on his game, he's one of the best to ever do it. That said, In recent years, since his brother passed and he's getting older, Ridley seems very focused on the idea of mortality, and probably his own legacy. Some of the decisions he's been making, haven't worked for me, but I wouldn't call him dumb. Probably misguided or overly prescious. I was actually a bit relieved when it was announced that he wouldn't be directing Blade Runner 2049. If he does indeed make his new Alien film, he has the Herculean task of now, tying up his own trilogy, as well as making it work within the canon of all the other films, regardless of how he feels about their quality.

And yeah, absolutely, O'Bannon wrote a phenomenal script for Alien. No doubt about that.

@Patient2670 - you're right. Dumb was just my oversimplification of his choices as of late.

I'm not even sure where to begin or end on that one. I guess we all lie to ourselves about one thing or another at some point in our lives.
Anyway, best wishes to him and the franchise.

He really does come off as a pretentious prick. He might have brought the franchise back with Prometheus, but he killed it with Covenant. And the franchise only came back again due to Romulus (the 3rd best Alien film, with Aliens of course being the best) and Alien: Earth.

"While many fans argue that Aliens is the better movie..." No, it's not. Never was. Quality wise it's a far cry from the first one. It never captured the philosophical background, nor the unparalleled atmosphere of "Alien". It was a nice and well shot sci-fi adventure. That's it.
MarvelZombie616

@ledis7 - Both are on the same level for me.

The first one has a really great space horror vibe with excellent actors playing great characters against Corporation greed - something the 2nd one does even better with Burke.
It also has the impressive large sparen Jockey -killed by the xenomorph and all these Alien eggs and the chestburster scene.
It is a really grounbreaking movie.

The 2nd one has created the Alien Queen - moving away from the eggmorphing which transforms human into Alien eggs and that makes no sense in conjunction with chestbursters.
It also shows the colonisation of planets by corporations trekking settlers likecsatlee and that technology is a Tool that can be used for good or bad.

Both movies had great sozial undertones.

The 3rd was bad as it had almost zero sozial undertones beides from people in prison, which is unrealistic to give a planet away to criminals.

The 4th abandoned the Earth War comics idea and was just an action romp executed poorly.

Prometheus had a great script - i read it, but was butchered.
The idea behind Meeting our creator Was good, the rest not.

Covenant is the worst entry - AI gone bad.

Romulus returned to the roots and showed how it was to grow up on a colony world with no possibility to escape from poverty without taking a risk and leasing the planet. From there it went full on action and even included zero gravity and acid, but went off the rail in the finale with the black goo body horror and that Engineer-hybrid monstrosity.

The thing with Alien movies is that they are all different from each other and need to have a social undertone to function, like every good science fiction story.
If they abandon that for action, they just fail.
