Avatar Director James Cameron Being Sued

Avatar Director James Cameron Being Sued

Apparently, a fan is stating that the Terminator filmmaker had stolen the Avatar idea from him. To make matters worst, the guy actually once worked at Cameron's production company.

Eric Ryder claims that the famed movie director, James Cameron, stole the story of Avatar from a movie he came up with called KRZ 2068--"environmentally themed 3-D epic about a corporation's colonization and plundering of a distant moon's lush and wondrous natural setting."

Posted by TMZ:
According to the suit, filed in L.A. County Superior Court, Ryder claims his reps pitched the movie idea to Cameron's production company back in 1999 ... and it was so well received, they had multiple serious meetings with high ranking execs about the development of the project.

But Ryder claims in 2002, the company officially shut down the project -- telling him, "No one would go see an environmentally themed feature length science fiction movie."

So when "Avatar" hit theaters in 2009 ... and made bazillions ... Ryder was furious.

In his suit, Ryder alleges he complained to Cameron's people in 2009 -- but when they finally got back to him earlier this year, they told him to kick rocks, claiming J.C. had written the story before 1999.

Ryder says Cameron's people are lying -- claiming there are way too many similarities between the two projects -- including Ryder's idea for one of the characters to be played by Sigourney Weaver.

Ryder is suing for unspecified damages -- probably a bloody fortune.

Attempts to reach Cameron's people were unsuccessful.

This wouldn't be the first time a big shot steals a little guy's project. It happens all the time in Hollywood.

Well, DC Comics needs to sue this guy because his supposed story is lifted from Adam Strange and then the estate of Edgar Rice Burroughs needs to sue both of them because those stories are almost entirely based on John Carter of Mars.

It's all the same story, just with different tweaks thrown in.

I'm not sure if this is true or not, but Cameron has always said he'd been trying to make Avatar for about 14/15 years prior to it's release, but had to wait until the technology had caught up.That's several years before these guys claim they pitched their story. If he has been working on this concept that long, he should be able to prove that.

Why hasn't the estate of 'Call Me Joe,' filed suit...that story is in the sci-fi hall of fame and was published in 1957 and is about...a paraplegic is given the chance to walk again by transferring his consciousness into a genetically created alien so that he can explore a dangerous environment. Slowly he becomes more and more native until eventually he completely transfers bodies and goes off on his own...Call Me Joe was the original and Cameron blatantly ripped it off and hasn't paid credit to the work at all...
