A new take on '50s B-movie cult classic Attack of the 50-Foot Woman is in development at Warner Bros., and it's going to be legendary filmmaker Tim Burton's next project.

The Batman and Beetlejuice director will helm the movie, with Gone Girl writer Gillian Flynn penning the script.

The original was an independent feature made for just $88,000 USD back in 1958. The story followed troubled heiress Nancy Archer, whose life is drastically altered after a close encounter with a UFO. Nancy is unable to convince anyone who believe her outlandish story, including her philandering husband Harry and his mistress, Honey, but things soon change when she begins to grow... and grow!

The movie proved to be a surprise hit, and its iconic poster art has endured as one of the most recognizable one-sheets of the era. Attack of the 50-Foot Woman was already remade back in 1993, with Christopher Guest directing and Daryl Hannah (Splash, Blade Runner) starring as Nancy. This version put a more feminist slant on the material, but was a notorious flop, and critics were not kind (it sits at 30% on Rotten Tomatoes).

Burton is also set to produce with Andrew Mittman and Tommy Harper. Kai Dolbashian will executive produce.

This type of movie would seem to be right in Burton's wheelhouse, as he's previously put his own stamp on '50s sci-fi classics with 1996's Mars Attacks, and brought the story of Plan 9 From Outer Space filmmaker Ed Wood to the screen in 1994. He also directed a loose remake of Planet of the Apes back in 2001.

Flynn adapted her own novel, Gone Girl, for David Fincher's acclaimed movie, and also penned the script for Emmy-nominated HBO limited series, Sharp Objects. A new take on her other bestseller, Dark Places, is in the works at HBO, and she will serve as co-showrunner and head writer on the show.

Check out the trailer for both the original and previous remake below.

"Attack of the 50 Foot Woman is a 1958 independently made American science fiction horror film directed by Nathan H. Juran (credited as Nathan Hertz) and starring Allison Hayes, William Hudson and Yvette Vickers. It was produced by Bernard Woolner. The screenplay was written by Mark Hanna, and the original music score was composed by Ronald Stein. The film was distributed in the United States by Allied Artists as a double feature with War of the Satellites. The Allied Artists television version runs 75 minutes instead of 66, including a long printed crawl at the beginning and end, repeated sequences, and hold-frames designed to optically lengthen the film's running time. The film's storyline concerns the plight of a wealthy heiress whose close encounter with an enormous alien in his round spacecraft causes her to grow into a giantess, complicating her marriage which is already troubled by a philandering husband."

This could be great. It's something Burton can go all in on.

Burton is pretty good with B movie concepts. Hopefully it's just as fun as the original. Didn't care for the other remake.

Slightly OT, but you know what movie I was suprised never got a sequel? Monsters vs Aliens I remember it being super funny and yet I never hearing much about it after it came out (funny enough it also has a woman turn giant after being hit with a meteorite lol).

@Superspecialawesomeguy - good question. Same goes for Prince of Egypt.

There's a load of animated movies that I feel flew under the radar and as such missed the spotlight I feel they deserved. MvA, Anastasia, Black Cauldron, Treasure Planet, Atlantis and Emperor's New Groove to name a few.

@Superspecialawesomeguy - Around that time, DreamWorks stopped making sequels to parody type movies like Monsters vs. Aliens or Megamind. It wasn't as profitable over seas, because foreign audiences weren't as familiar with the concept.

P.S. Susan from Monsters vs. Aliens is based on the 50ft. Woman

Just imagine if it was Taratino instead of Burton directing this.

75% of the movie would be lovingly drawn-out shots of various characters being crushed by giant female bare-feet! 😝

Also I remember Tim wanting to make a movie based on those old Dinosaurs Attacks! trading card games back in the 90's I think, but the plans got derailed by the Jurassic Park movies; but I think they could work today imo.

Loved "Mars Attacks!" (and still do) so hopefully he can bring that kind of satire and cleverness given the silliness of the original concept and doesn't weigh it down with unnecessary social commentary and such (which he doesn't really tend to do a lot of that I can think of off the top of my head) like the remake tried to do. I understand that given the source material in this day and age it's kind of hard to avoid any sort of feminism type of commentary, but sometimes folks just want to watch a giant-ass angry bitch smash a bunch of shit for 2 hours. Let's pair her with Nightbitch and watch them REALLY tear some shit up!

@StSteven -

9 is awesome
Batman Returns is awesome
Chocolate Factory remake was solid
Edward Scissorhands is classic.
Beetlejuice is EPICALLY CLASSIC

"Big Eyes, Dark Shadows, Corpse Bride, Nightmare Before Christmas, Mars Attacks, Ed Wood...and most of all: Pee-Wee's Big Adventure (which is Burton's best film ever)." are all awesome.

50 ft woman should be in great directorially hands.

@lazlodaytona - Agreed on all accounts and I have no doubt that "50" (too lazy to type more than that) will be awesome as well. Hell I even liked his "Apes" movie at the time, although by no we've seen a MUCH better approach to that material. Plus, he seems overall to do better working with original or little-known material (although I loved both of his Batman films) so that he can really do his thing unfettered.

@StSteven - His Apes remake is highly underrated.
and I believe studios hire him knowing to just let the man be....

we'll see him at our local-but-closed Blockbuster.

StSteven - 2/4/2024, 6:47 PM
@lazlodaytona - Funny Blockbuster story: when I was in my younger college days, my dad (who worked for Sprint Corp. as a manager at the time) apparently made some bad financial decisions which made it hard for my parents to make ends meet, so my mom (who was a hair dresser working out of their house) made my dad get a second job for a while, which ended up being at our local Blockbuster. My dad is bald but was in denial at the time so he wore a hairpiece and Blockbuster did pre-employment drug tests. Hair tests... Needless to say, like Baskin Robbins, Blockbuster always finds out. Or, at least did.

FWIW, he got the job anyway (guessing that he had to do a blood test instead). BB don't f**k around!

50 ft woman. a whole 50 feet.

I can't stand all of a 5'2" slut who lies and cheats behind your back. compared to that?!
at least at 50 feet the elephant in the room will need to be addressed asap.

and is Hollywood seriously so desperate for new ideas that this is the drivel they've come up with?!
has there actually been some fan-circuit/fanbase who is getting behind a #50footwomanmetoo #metoo #psychoticbitchesalwayslookingforalamearguement

Waste of f'n time.

Don't treat $88,000 as if it were a small sum, especially in 1958 (which would be over million dollars today.
