Blade Runner 2049, starring Ryan "The Goose" Gosling, Harrison Ford and Jarryd Leto is set some 30 years after the original, which was directed by Ridley Scott and released in 1982. Directed by Denis Villeneuve, the visionary director of Sicario and Arrival, Blade Runner 2049 continues to show audiences why he is possibly the best director in the field today. Featuring mind blowing shot after mind blowing shot, 2049 is one of the greatest visual feasts we've ever seen in a cinema.

2049 follow Agent Kae who upon making a startling discovery, with potentially world altering ramifiations, is thrust into a collision course with Deckard and the creator of this new breed of replicants Wallace (played exceptionly well by Leto) The plot moves slowly to be sure and this might erk some as the movie is quite long coming in at just under 3 hours however we found it to be superbly paced, gripping and utterly copelling from start to finish. 2049 is a brilliant detective drama wrapped up in the sci-fi rags that are the Blade Runners signiture futuristc L.A.

If you weren't a fan of The Goose before Blade Runner 2049 you will be after this as he gives his best on screen performance since the likes of Drive. Ford delivers a gripping performance and is a powerhouse when he steps on screen. Two side characters, both female, are portrayed wonderfully and are both likeable and you can't help but feel for them. Portrayed by Ana De Armas and Sylvia Hoaks their performances are very satisfying to watch.

Arguably the most visually stunning movie of the last decade and accompionied by a riverting, mind melting score, Blade Runner 2049 is one of the best cinema going experiences we've ever had. Upon the credits hitting screen we were left stunned and speechless, literally sitting in our chairs for a moment trying to process what we had just witnessed. Watch Blade Runner 2049 on the biggest screen possible and hope that the audio is jammed at 11. 2017 has a new front runner for best movie among multiple other awards.

To long and I just found myself getting bored. I had to keep forcing myself to stay awake. I could never watch it a second time at the movies.

3 stars out of 5 just for scenery

Good movie? Yes! Masterpiece? Not really as demonstrated by the films RT audience score which is dropping to levels that better reflects its quality. The film is visually beautiful and stunning and the story builds very well off what has come before it. The performances by all of the characters are strong and the films score and the writing are really good. It was a film I enjoyed watching very much even with the lengthy runtime. But the telltale difference for me between something I would call a masterpiece and something that is simply an entertaining film is whether or not the film is something I want to watch again. This film is not that. It was great seeing it once, I could not enjoy a second sitting. The dings against the film is that characters come in and out without much development or much use. The main antagonist (Wallace) never confronts the main protagonist (K); the film lingers on the world around it far too long; and the twist at the end is haphazardly executed by using blatant deception that quite frankly creates a plot hole. MAJOR SPOILER ALERT - The woman who makes dreams for the replicants who turns out to be Rick Deckard's child...why would she put her own memories in a replicant...oh yeah... the movie does not bother to explain that...and that is the problem among others. Other prominent characters such as Mackenzie Davis' Mariette serve virtually no essential purpose in the film, yet get a good amount of screentime. My sense was that it was just to appeal to nostalgia since she resembles Daryl Hannah's Pris from the original Blade Runner film. Overall, it is a very well made film, but I think we would do well if we stop throwing around the word "Masterpiece" for now the third time this year for films that are just pretty good.

Out of five starts I would give it three
