BOX OFFICE: DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES Set To Stay At #1 For Second Weekend
As amazing as Guardians of the Galaxy looks, it's going to have to do a lot to top Dawn of the Planet of the Apes as arguably this summer's best movie! Either way, the Matt Reeves helmed sequel looks set to take the #1 spot again this weekend, beating competition from The Purge sequel and more...
According to The Wrap, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes looks set to stay at top of the North American box office with $35 million this weekend, holding off competition from The Purge: Anarchy (which stars Captain America: The Winter Soldier's Frank Grillo) and the critically panned comedy Sex Tape. Great reviews and positive word of mouth means that Matt Reeve's fantastic follow-up to Rise of the Planet of the Apes has suffered a drop of only 52%, meaning it has held up a lot better than The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Godzilla, X-Men: Days of Future Past and Transformers: Age of Extinction. The latter is set to take $9 million during its fourth week of release.
Editor's Note: Both Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and Transformers: Age of Extinction didn't hit the UK until a week or two after the US, so I didn't get around to writing reviews for either. The latter is probably the best instalment yet in the Michael Bay helmed franchise (which may not be saying much depending on your thoughts on them), but it's also incredibly forgettable and I'd struggle to say too much more about it at this point. It is however a lot of fun. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes meanwhile is easily on of this summer's best movies, and the work done by Andy Serkis, Toby Kebbell and the rest of the motion capture actors who collaborated with WETA is nothing short of incredible. It's a fantastic movie, and I can't wait to see where Reeves takes the franchise next. The 3D in both is pointless though. What did you guys think about these two movies?
