BOX OFFICE: DIVERGENT Knocks The Stuffing Out Of MUPPETS MOST WANTED

Lionsgate-Summit’s Divergent will claim the top spot at the domestic box office this weekend with an estimated $54M. While Disney's Muppets Most Wanted fizzled with an $18M debut.

Lionsgate-Summit’s Divergent had an especially strong debut, pulling in over $23 million in Thursday and Friday screenings. That puts the young-adult book-to-film on track for $54 million, give or take a million. This would give Divergent the second-best opening for a 2014 film, after The Lego Movie, which opened to $69 million. While $54 million is nothing to sneeze at it is short of recent projections that were north of $60 million. Critics didn't take a shine to Divergent, with a 40 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences on the otherhand seemed to enjoy the sci-fi adventure quite a bit. It received an 'A' CinemaScore from audiences. That audience was 59% female and 41% male equally over and under the age of twenty-five.

Coming in a distant second this weekend was Disney's Muppets Most Wanted. The sequel will open with a disappointing $18 million. The 2011 The Muppets film, which starred Amy Adams and Jason Segel opened to $41 million over the Thanksgiving holiday, including $29 million for the weekend. The sequel's lackluster totals are probably caused by stiff competition from other family-friendly films, Mr. Peabody & Sherman and The Lego Movie. Audiences gave it a 'B+' CinemaScore.

When she discovers a conspiracy to destroy all Divergents, she must find out what makes being Divergent so dangerous before it's too late.

DIVERGENT is directed by Neil Burger (Limitless), and is based on a best-selling book series by Veronica Roth. The cast includes: Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Kate Winslet, Ray Stevenson, Mekhi Phifer, Maggie Q, Jai Courtney, Zoe Kravitz, Ashley Judd and Miles Teller. It's set to hit theaters on March 21st, 2014.

Is Divergent any good? Im not a huge fan of Twilight or Hunger Games but I watch them anyway with various concubines.

Great news!
People comparing it to Twilight is ridiculous, like for some reason Twilight was the first ever YA movie.
The romance isn't even a central part to the film and Catching Fire was an amazing film, so comparing it to that is entirely positive.

I honestly would have loved it if she would have stayed on with "Amazing" 2. To see Garf and her performing together would have been the greatest C level un-intentionally funny acting since... well... I don't know as I can't think of an acting duo that bad.

Man, she's a horrible actress, and Garf ain't much better... actually he is, but I just want to punch him in his douchy face.

See you at the movies!

Colored me surprised. Expected Divergent to fall flat on it's ass.

Looks like a Hunger Games wannabe which is just a Battle Royale wannabe so it gets a meh from me. Maybe I'll catch it on Redbox for a random family movie night.

Muppets 2 honestly doesn't look anywhere as good as the first and didn't have the holiday weekend advantage so not surprised it's not doing as well.

It's actually not doing too bad critically, it's got above a 5/10 score amongst RT critics. Most of you fellas haven't even seen this film yet and you're already bashing it. Come on, it's got Kate Winslet in it. It's gotta be worth something, the trailers look alright IMO.

Plus, the trailers look far better than the Robocop remake. That's for sure. It made more opening this weekend than the majority of Robocop's domestic take as of now, showing that audiences are more excited to see a female-led action film rather than the exhausting Hollywood remake over-and-over again. At least this is based off of something that hasn't been adapted to the screen before. Give it a break.

Sabotage looks pretty good IMO, but Noah looks dull and boring to me. I seriously can't wait for Cap as well, that film is gonna kill it (everything goes).

I will never watch this movie solely because of Shailene Woodley. Just... No. *Shudders* I watched Hunger Games on RedBox, It had an interesting story and acting was solid but a few nitpicks like her having her bow drawn back for minutes at a time and waving it around peoples heads carelessly really ruined it for me. I would be open to watching Catching Fire if it came on tv or something.

@TheGambit

Wait, you said you won't watch Divergent because of Shailene Woodley, then described no reason why you have a problem with her?? She's a very talented actress and seems like a real genuine person on interviews.

You'd have to pay me to go to the cinema on Friday night, especially to a movie that just opened that day. I can't be the only one not willing to pay $15 to have the experience ruined by a crowd of squealing fangirls, rowdy douchebags, screaming children, and/or confused oldsters.

Watching MUPPETS tomorrow. Disney oddly dialed back its marketing on the movie -- saw many more ads for it months ago than in the last couple of weeks.
