BOX OFFICE: INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE Flounders As FINDING DORY Remains On Top This Weekend

It looks like we can add another box office flop to the ever growing list of 2016 disappointments as Independence Day: Resurgence won't come anywhere near Finding Dory's haul this weekend...

Independence Day: Resurgence is a terrible, terrible movie in this writer's opinion, and that could very well explain why moviegoers have rejected it this weekend. Coming in below expectations, the Roland Emmerich helmed release took only $17 million on Friday for a weekend haul of around $43 million. That's not a great start for a movie which cost $165 million to make, though like Warcraft, there's every chance it will perform well enough overseas for Fox to consider a third instalment of the franchise.

With any luck, that won't be forced on us for another twenty years, but the real king of the box office this weekend was Finding Dory. Remaining at #1, the animated Pixar sequel (proving that 2016 has treated at least some follow-ups better than others) made $23 million yesterday for a weekend total of an estimated $75 million. That's a decline of only 44% from its opening weekend, and the Ellen DeGeneres led movie should close in on the $300 million mark domestically by Monday morning.

What did you decide to watch this weekend? Let us know that in the comments section below.

I did not see the movie nor do I plan on it. It looked terrible from the word Go and nothing made it look any better.

@mcminnjb1990 - well what do you except from a sequel to a Will Smith movie that doesn't have Will Smith? Your movies pretty much dead on arrival.

@Ironbot - for sure you nailed it. Plus the younger Hemsworth can't act. He needs to train more.
