According to Deadline, writer Jason Rothenberg has landed the dual gig of writing the remake of the 1970 sci-fi classic Colossus: The Forbin Project as well as the big screen version of Rod Serling's The Twilight Zone.

Colossus, based on the novel by the late D.F. Jones, tells of the creation of the world's ultimate computer designed to manage America's weapons defense systmes, but, instead, gaining sentience and taking over the world. The original starred Eric Braeden as Dr. Charles Forbin, the creator of Colossus, and was directed by Joseph Sargent. Says Deadline, "Ron Howard is attached to direct and Will Smith is attached to a contemporary Frankenstein story about the world's first sentient computer and the misunderstood genius who gains power over the world because of it."

If the Deadline story is correct, putting Forbin into a position of power is a new twist for the remake. In the original, Colossus keeps Forbin alive (albeit closely monitored) out of some sort of strange affection for its creator.

Quite a number of films can be viewed as being inspired by Colossus, among them The Terminator, Wargames and Eagle Eye.

Rothenberg is also writing The Twilight Zone for Leonardno DiCaprio's Appian Way production company. The site offers, "Details are scant, but the expectation is they will take some of the original stories written for the series by the likes of Serling and Richard Matheson." Which is the same approach that Steven Spielberg and others took for the 1983 Twilight Zone: The Movie.
