Legendary director David Cronenberg (The Fly, Dead Ringers, Videodrome) has finally shared some details on his next project, and it sounds like the body-horror maestro is getting back to his roots for Crimes of The Future.

The sci-fi thriller is set "in a distant future where humans have evolved beyond their natural state and into a metamorphosis, altering their biological makeup. In this setting, a performance artist named Saul Tenser embraces Accelerated Evolution Syndrome, sprouting new and unexpected organs in his body. Removing those organs becomes a new kind of theater, one that earns a following, as well as the attention of the government."

It doesn't get any more Cronenbergian than that!

Viggo Mortensen is set to play the lead (Tenser, we assume), re-teaming with the filmmaker after starring in A History of Violence, Eastern Promises and A Dangerous Method. He'll be joined by Kristen Stewart, Léa Seydoux, Scott Speedman, Welket Bungué, Don McKellar and Lihi Kornowski.

“To work with David Cronenberg is to embark on a journey exploring terrain where no one has gone before,” said producer Robert Lantos. “Each of our collaborations has been an exhilarating adventure and David’s unwavering vision is what real cinema is all about.”

Cronenberg also wrote the script for Neon and Serendipity Point Films. Production is scheduled to get underway this summer in Athens, Greece.
