DOCTOR SLEEP Director Mike Flanagan Wants To Adapt Stephen King's Epic THE DARK TOWER Series

Doctor Sleep and The Haunting of Hill House director Mike Flanagan has revealed that he would love to take a crack at bringing Stephen King's The Dark Tower back to the big (or small) screen...

Filmmaker Mike Flanagan recently spoke to SYFY Wire about his Netflix series, The Haunting of Bly Manor, and revealed that there is yet another Stephen King adaptation he hopes to bring to the big or small screen: The Dark Tower. Previously, he's adapted The Shining sequel Doctor Sleep and Gerald's Game for the author, and King's epic sci-fi fantasy novel series is in desperate need of a reboot.

The disastrous 2017 movie starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey flopped with $113 million at the worldwide box office, and while attempting to make a sequel to the novels was a clever idea, it was one director Nikolaj Arcel failed to pull off despite the star-studded cast.

"The Dark Tower is forever going to be the story I wish I could tell," Flanagan said. "That would be the Holy Grail. I mean, talk about an adaptation challenge. So many very talented people have poured so much time and heart and soul and blood, sweat, and tears trying to crack that."

There was once a TV series in the works which was going to feature Elba in a couple of bookend scenes, delving into the history of The Gunslinger, Roland Deschain. That ended up being scrapped, so the opportunity is there to reboot the property... assuming there's a studio that's actually interested!

Do you think Flanagan would be a good fit for The Dark Tower?

Let the man do it...As a series that is...It’ll never work in a film type of franchise...There’s just too much there to try and adapt in...

@vegetaray - exactly. give the guy creative control and a streaming platform to tell the story over however many seasons he wants. it's a no-brainer

Wonder if they'll follow the source this time or they'll fu*k it up twice.

Flanagan would be my ideal choice to adapt the Dark Tower series. A Dark Tower tv show could be the next Game of Thrones if they actually follow the books this time. Netflix needs to get the rights to the books and give Flanagan a big budget and cast actors that actually fit the role this time.

His work has been great so far, let him have a crack.

It needs to be a TV series though. Far too much detail in the books, too much backstory, too much nuance. Whoever thought they could cram the entire saga into that 1hr 35min 2017 teaser must have been on meth.

I do love Flanagan's stuff, I've been following him since Oculus. I'd love for him to do the Dark Tower, as others have said, give him a big enough budget and creative control and I reckon he could work wonders.

He also seems to really get King and he's lined up to adapt Revival when he finishes off directing Midnight Mass. Guy's certainly got his hands full atm.

@rexlincoln -

I haven't seen many of his movies or TV shows since I don't watch the Horror Genre (Too Scary for me).
But I did watch Hush, his inventive and very tense take on the Slahser movie, also had a great premise as well.
Would love to see his attempt at Dark Tower.

Also I'm just glad he's finally getting some recognition.

Yes please. I've loved almost everything he's done, and with how shitty that first Dark Tower movie was, him rebooting it would be more than welcomed.

It needs to be TV because it's too much for film. The movie failed because it tried to stuff too much lore in and was blatantly reshot because he was very clearly meant to kill Jake. Personally I'd cut the losses and start again with book 1 and let it grow. The series works because it starts as a slow burning sci fi tinged western. It gets bigger and bigger but you dont need to start with rat people, doors and shining. You need to start with the man in black fled across the desert and the gunslinger followed.

**Book spoiler warning**

Plus if it took off, take the opportunity to give it a good ending. No shark jumping Steven King is god plots or the Crimson King getting rubbed out by a magic pencil.

Aaron Paul has to be cast as Eddie Dean.

@GothamSon - that's actually a pretty great call. I don't know why, but I always pictured Eddie the same as Larry Underwood from the stand while reading TDT books. Long dark hair,, tall and kinda wiry.

Dark Shadow movie failed, not gonna happen anytime soon.

It revived Stephen King adaptions, then none of the other adaptions really lived up to it, and then It Chapter 2 pretty much ended the fad
