EDGE OF TOMORROW Sequel In The Works With Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, & Director Doug Liman Expected To Return
Well, here's some really exciting news to close out your week as Warner Bros. has officially enlisted The Invention of Lying scribe Matthew Robinson to pen their long-rumored Edge of Tomorrow sequel...
Deadline is reporting that Warner Bros. is officially moving forward with the long-rumored Edge of Tomorrow sequel, tentatively titled Live Die Repeat and Repeat, and have enlisted Matthew Robinson (The Invention of Lying) to pen the script.
Director Doug Liman (American Made) will return to direct the sequel and will also develop the film's script alongside Robinson.
Both Tom Cruise (Mission: Impossible - Fallout) and Emily Blunt (Mary Poppins Returns) are expected to reprise their roles as Major William Cage and Sergeant Rita Vrataski, respectively, however, neither party is expected to sign a deal with the studio until they've both approved the script.
Cruise is currently filming Paramount's Top Gun: Maverick with Joe Kosinski (Only the Brave) and is then expected to begin production on Mission: Impossible 7 & Mission: Impossible 8 with Chris McQuarrie (Mission: Impossible - Fallout) by the end of this calendar year. He'll likely stay busy with those highly-anticipated sequels for most of 2020, meaning Edge of Tomorrow 2 could theoretically begin production at the end of next year or maybe early 2021.
Blunt recently wrapped Disney's Jungle Cruise and is expected to begin filming A Quiet Place 2 with her husband John Krasinski (A Quiet Place) sometime this summer, but outside of that project, her schedule for the next two years is looking fairly open. However, considering she's one of Hollywood's most sought-after leading ladies, it should be expected that she'll become attached to a number of high-profile projects sooner rather than later.
Regardless, 2021/2022 seems the likely bet for when cameras will roll on this long-awaited follow-up to the critically-acclaimed 2014 sleeper hit.
