EDGE OF TOMORROW Star Emily Blunt Shares Sequel Hopes And Explains How It Would Have To Differ From First Film

Fans have long hoped for an Edge of Tomorrow sequel, and while star Emily Blunt is keen to make one a reality, the actress has admitted the premise might need to be shaken up in any possible follow-up.

Based on Hiroshi Sakurazaka's critically acclaimed 2004 novel All You Need Is KillEdge of Tomorrow was released in 2014 to positive reviews and an impressive $370 million haul at the worldwide box office on a $178 million budget.

Directed by Dough Liman, the movie starred Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt as soldiers trapped in a time loop, with the former using that as an opportunity to better his skills and eventually defeat Earth's alien invaders. It was a fun premise that left sci-fi fans desperate for a sequel.

While plans for a follow-up have yet to be confirmed, it was back in 2015 we first heard about tentative plans to expand the franchise.

During a recent interview with Deadline (via SFFGazette.com), Blunt shared her thoughts on why Edge of Tomorrow 2 has yet to become a reality and put the delays down to the need to find a compelling premise which doesn't run the risk of wearing the concept too thin.

After all, there's only so far an idea like this can go, something the actress acknowledges.

"Well, I would love to do another one. I don’t know when and I don’t know how, but I would love it. I don’t know if my back could take it. In the funniest, most charming way in the world because [Tom Cruise] was such a gem to me."

"But I think we just knew I just had to toughen up and get through it. Because otherwise, you would spend the entire film fighting against the fact that you wished your suit was lighter, but it wasn’t. But I loved the experience so much, and I would love to work with Doug [Liman] again."

"It’s like we have to create something as ambitious as the first one. How much more mileage can we get out of a repeating day? What’s the new construct?"

It's a valid question and Cruise does appear to be busy with other projects these days. Among them are another Mission: Impossible movie, an untitled blockbuster that will take the actor into outer space, and a rumoured third instalment of Top Gun

"...left sci-fi fans desperate for a sequel."

Really? I loved the movie but never thought twice about needing it to have a follow-up.

As it has been 10 years. The film while popular is not engrained in the subconscious of the pop culture. Which means it would be better to just bring back the key players (Cruise, Blunt and Liman) in a brand new film with a new story and even a different genre possibly. Instead of trying to catch lightning twice on a gimmick.

The movie was [frick]ing stellar on almost every level across the board but I've never even been "...desperate for a sequel."

They could do some Night of the Living Dead 2 shit and just recreate the first movie with the same people and pretend it's different - which in today's world would look wildly creative by comparison.

They should just do a prequel about Verdun and call it a day

Edge of Tomorrow is one of the only films Ive seen and thought I’d love to see the prequel to this. Make it about the Battle of Verdun.

Think it would help if they use another strong sci-fi concept. First one had timetravel (kinda), so maybe the second could focus on something else. As long as it is tied to the aliens to keep continuity

Really great movie. Not sure how to spin a sequel using the same cast. Maybe if they used fresh faces from a different part of the war. Then maybe tie 1st and 2nd casts together in a third movie.

well its simple. dont do a repeating day. just maker a movie about the invasion and have it lead up to her repeating time.
