Escape From New York: Zack Snyder Has Found His Snake Plissken; Reveals When Reboot Is Set

Watchmen and Justice League director Zack Snyder has revealed new details about his plans to reboot Escape From New York, and it sounds like the filmmaker intends to stick closely to the 1981 original.

In June, the trades revealed that Man of Steel director Zack Snyder had been enlisted to write and direct a new take on Escape from New York. The filmmaker has big shoes to fill, as John Carpenter's 1981 movie is widely considered a classic.

Given the largely negative response to Snyder's latest feature, The Last Photograph, who knows whether his version of Escape from New York will ever see the light of day. The plan is to release it theatrically, but Snyder's track record on that front—and with critics—is hit-and-miss.

Kurt Russell played Snake Plissken in the original movie, set in 1997 after a major war between the United States and the Soviet Union concluded. The entire island of Manhattan has been converted into a giant maximum-security prison, and when Air Force One is hijacked and crashes into the island, the president is taken hostage by a group of inmates.

Snake Plissken, a former Special Forces soldier turned criminal, is recruited to retrieve the president in exchange for his own freedom.

Talking to Josh Horowitz (via SFFGazette.com), Snyder finally broke his silence on Escape from New York by saying, "The approach for me is to... well, I mean, you know, the movie is going to be set in '97, from the perspective of 1981."

"I set the movie, the sort of war between the United States police force and the criminal elements, on July 9th, 1981, which is the release date of the original movie," he continued. "The rest is pretty much Escape from New York, you know? Talk about a movie that is like the perfect combination of kitsch and camp. That's why I love it, you know?"

"But also, it's a way that satire can get to us. We can make comments about government and all the, you know, overreach, or whatever you want to call it, the People's Liberation Front of America, right? You know, all that stuff is very... that's in the headlines. I think it's quite current in some ways," Snyder concluded.

Asked if he has an actor in mind for Snake, Snyder confirmed that he does but refused to say whether it's someone he's already worked with. As for whether the character will have his iconic eyepatch, the filmmaker replied, "Yeah. He better look like Snake, or I'm like, 'I'll walk out.'" Snyder also confirmed that Jeffrey Dean Morgan has reached out to him about the role.

Attempts to reboot Escape from New York have persisted for years, with directors Len Wiseman, Brett Ratner, Breck Eisner, Robert Rodriguez, Leigh Whannell, and Radio Silence all attached at one time or another. Gerard Butler was even attached to star.

Will Snyder just remake the original movie? When the news of his involvement first broke, it was said that he "aims to make a more down-and-dirty movie, using plenty of practical effects or locations like he did when he remade Dawn of the Dead as his feature debut."

Keep the feathered hair, the knee-high boots, etc. Hell, cast Kurt Russell and use cgi to de-age him.

@GeneralZod - oh you know he's at the very least gonna cameo.

Honestly, aside from maybe 2000AD, I'm not sure there's a better IP for Snyder to adapt than Escape. I think this outta be perfect for Zack.

I love ‘Escape From New York’, so I’m excited to see an updated version of it. If I don’t like it, it’s no big deal because the original version will always be around.

I don’t think this will happen anymore. His last movie just super bombed. No one will give him another movie to directed or write.

@Mrnorth1921 - A couple of nights ago somebody was glorifying Zack Snyder up and down including saying his movies are peak cinema. The comment was full of glowing compliments. I said something like, “sarcasm, right?” I got a reply the next day ask what was wrong with me😂😂😂
Mrnorth1921
Mrnorth1921 - 9/17/2026, 9:36 PM
@RolandD - shakes head. He cannot direct any more movies. At least for a while. And never, ever, ever write again. But personally? He should be a cinematographer. He’s excel in that position and might win a few awards like that.
RolandD
RolandD - 9/17/2026, 9:40 PM
@Mrnorth1921 - 100%. I thought he did a good enough job with Watchmen because he followed the story very closely. I’ve never seen 300 or read the graphic novel but from what I understand it was almost panel for panel and I do know that movie gets a lot of praise but his biggest strength is like you pointed out, as a cinematographer. I just have to imagine it’s hard to go back to that after being the director.
Mrnorth1921
Mrnorth1921 - 9/17/2026, 9:54 PM
@RolandD - watchmen was decent. And very close, however he lacks the understanding of the deeper meaning behind it. I’d argue that 300 was perfect for him.

And you’re right. But sometimes you can find your calling later in life. This might be a wake up call .

@Mrnorth1921 - You're entirely right. Back to back poor reception, along with his peak being like middling success is the story of his last 5 years. His name more and more is poison. Expect him to start DC baiting even harder now since he knows his psychotic fans are his only supporters

@IronSpider101 - he admitted in an interview that they aren’t toxic. Either he is delusional or just an ass. I remember reading on Reddit claiming that WB should have let him do JL. I saw “his” vision for it and it was terrible. Should have let him go after BVS.

@Mrnorth1921 - idk about that but you could be right since even Netflix ending his partnership…

However he’s doing a movie for the Saudis so he might just end directing mid budget stuff.
RolandD
RolandD - 9/17/2026, 11:51 PM
@Mrnorth1921 - I think that he has a much higher belief in his ability to make deep movies than most of us believe that he has.

@Mrnorth1921 - ehhh , I’m fine with it

Dude had his take on the DC universe , I didn’t particularly like it but I’m fine with him making other films since some can be fun.
