On How She Came To Work On Elysium:
I'm a Hollywood costume designer, I've done many kinds of movies, but I've never done this kind of science fiction movie. When one of the producers called and asked if I'd be interested and sent me the script, I was thrilled to try it out!
On How Closely She Worked With Director Neill Blomkamp:
Very closely. A lot of what we did was what Neill requested. He's a director who knows what he wants and it's such a pleasure to work with someone who knows exactly what he wants. I cooperated and collaborated with him quite a lot.
On Where She Turned For Inspiration:
Well, that's a hard question! My inspiration is the script, and my inspiration of course came from working with Jodie Foster. She's an inspiration. Matt Damon's an inspiration. You know, just going by the script and the actors.
On Using Brands Like Armani In The Movie:
Jodie has a previous relationship with Armani, so when I worked with her, I decided it was best to go down there and see if there were things right for the movie, and actually there were! That's why I decided to use them. They're very nice and they're very cooperative.
On Designing Costumes For The Poor And Rich Factions In The Film:
That was really fun to do. One is very dirty and one is very crisp and clean.
On The Biggest Challenges She Faced Working On Elysium:
I made uniforms for Sharlto out of African camo which I couldn't find anywhere and had to make and have the camouflage printed. It was very difficult because Neil had me talk to the costume designer of District 9 as he thought she could go out and buy camo in South Africa and send it to us, but they don't sell it to anyone other than the military! So, we had to get one piece and then have yards and yards of the stuff printed.
On Who She Most Enjoyed Designing The Costumes For:
I enjoyed the whole thing, I don't have one favourite!
On Whether Elysium Has Made Her A Fan Of The Sci-Fi Genre:
I've done many films - over fifty - but I've never done this type of film before. I found it very interesting. I was not a fan before, but I am now. The world of costume design is an important part of making movies and I love doing it!
On Working On RoboCop:
That was shot in Toronto, Canada, and I was freezing the whole time! It was unusually hard, because I think there were more characters, but it's...interesting!
In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government official will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn't stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.
