We're on day three of Comic-Con and it's fair to say that the first trailer for Glass will remain a highlight of the event because it impressed in a big way yesterday evening. We're now taking a look at both that and the panel for the movie which took place to bring you all the biggest new details and reveals.
The panel was brief but definitely informative, while the trailer itself featured some shocking moments.
So, to take a look at our breakdown, all you guys have to do is click on the "View List" button below. There's a lot here we think you'll have missed, so be sure to check it out and stay tuned for more.
M. Night Shyamalan Wasn't Allowed To Mention Comics While Promoting Unbreakable
Unbreakable is very much a superhero movie but it sure as hell wasn't promoted like one back in 1998. Despite the fact it kicked off by revealing just how popular comic books were during the late 90s, M. Night Shyamalan was forbidden from mentioning them during Unbreakable's marketing campaign.
"I remember when we were marketing the movie and they kept saying we can't mention the word comic book or superheroes because it was too fringe," the filmmaker explains. "They just kept saying we are going to avoid mentioning that in the marketing." As he then noted, things have changed!
How Glass Came To Be
When Split was released, everyone assumed it was just a pretty standard - albeit awesome looking - psychological thriller. Well, that it was until the movie's final couple of minutes when Bruce Willis appeared as David Dunn, linking the movie to Unbreakable. However, the story behind how that came to be is actually fascinating and it sounds like it took a surprising amount of work behind the scenes.
"I did a bunch of small movies and self-contained movies, but there was this little crumb from Unbreakable, and I took those pages out and so I did Split, and asked Disney if we could do a little twist at the end – with their character – and they were very gracious and then here we are," Shyamalan reveals. "This is something that we may never see again, when two studios own the IP on two properties come together to make a sequel that they both were on board with sharing."
Bruce Willis Shot That Scene In Split For Nothing
Unfortunately, Bruce Willis wouldn't say much about returning as David in Glass as he wanted to let the trailer speak for itself but it was revealed that the actor shot that scene in Split for nothing and came in as a favour solely to Shyamalan. Had Split ultimately been a box office disappointment, this third chapter probably never would have happened so including it was a risk on nearly everyone's part.
Samuel L. Jackson Addresses Mr. Glass' Return
Unbreakable made it clear that Mr. Glass is a pretty complex fellow but it sounds like that barely scratched the surface and we'll see a whole lot more of it in this movie. Asked what he likes about playing the character, Samuel L. Jackson explained it's his mind which makes the villain interesting.
"I love the complexity of Elijah," he said. "He has a mom that he is loving. He has this strong mind, but fragile body. And he has a belief that is stronger than anything anybody can take from him. See...I don’t play the same mother f****r all the time!" Now, it's time to break down that trailer...
Do You Believe You're A Superhero?
In this world, it appears as if anyone who believes they're a superhero is perceived as having serious psychological problems and that's a growing trend (which could be an indication that more and more superpowered individuals are starting to surface). While we know Glass will focus on David, Kevin, and Elijah, it is, of course, possible that we'll actually see some new characters added to the mix here.
That would expand this shared universe in a major way and while it's possible Shyamalan wants to tell a relatively self-contained story with Glass, it's hard to imagine he doesn't have even bigger plans.
Group Therapy
In one of the coolest shots from the trailer, we see our three leads each being assessed by Sarah Paulson's psychiatrist. Given his dishevelled appearance, Glass has clearly been here a while but seeing as we know he was locked up in an asylum at the end of Unbreakable for those terrorist attacks, it's likely he's never actually left. Now confined to a wheelchair, his condition may have worsened.
Kevin is just sitting there and not confined in any way but David has been locked down tight as his strength is clearly something the authorities are well aware of. The question is, do they think he's just a really tough, dangerous dude, or are they aware that he's strangely more powerful than your average 63-year-old? Regardless, what's even more interesting is how this trio actually winds up together.
David Vs. Kevin
The end of Split made it clear that David was planning on hunting Kevin down and it seems that's exactly what's happening here as he bumps into him on the street - which can't be a coincidence - and has a vision of a group of cheerleaders the villain is keeping prisoner. It's safe to assume that these two come to blows but end up being arrested and sent to the institution due to the fallout from that.
David And Kevin Versus The Police
At various points throughout the trailer, we see both David and Kevin clash with the police. What's not clear is whether this is before or after they end up in the asylum but the official synopsis for Glass has promised that these two have a series of battles and that they ultimately wind up on the radar of the authorities. At one point, Kevin can be seen surrounded by them and while we know that The Beast is pretty much immune to bullets, it looks like his doctor is stepping in to protect him during this scene.
Interestingly, she also seems to be in the midst of helping David overcome his one weakness: water.
Mr. Glass Meets The Beast
Are you ready for a supervillain team-up? Clearly embracing his roots as a bad guy,Mr. Glass seems anxious to work alongside The Beast, someone we know will be more than happy to call him an ally given how much he's suffered in the past. Throw in the fact that David can't be hurt and it makes sense that he's found an archnemesis. The question is, what is Elijah looking to gain in this movie? Does he simply want revenge on David or something more? I wouldn't be shocked if it's a little bit of both.
Some Familiar Faces
At one point in the trailer, we see David's son, Elijah's mother, and The Beast's former captive, Casey Cooke. It appears as if they've been brought together to help aid in the treatment of the three superpowered individuals but could it be that the authorities are hoping to use them to catch the trio after they escape? For now, that obviously remains to be seen but their return is definitely interesting.
