Says Deadline's Mike Fleming, "The film is set in contemporary San Francisco, where a genetic engineering experiment leads to the creation of intelligence in apes, causing an inevitable conflict between species. Fox has already partnered with Peter Jackson's WETA Digital for the cutting edge visual effects. Franco plays a young scientist who becomes a crucial figure in the war between humans and apes."

Anything is better than Tim Burton's remake.

This is certainly an interesting way to go -- rather than (again) remaking the original film, they're using elements of the fourth to serve as the inspiration for a reboot. I'm intrigued as hell by it and really wonder what they'll come up with.

Shhh, it was simply called Planet of the Apes.

And JohnClayBurchett, at least they're not going the predictable route with it.

By the way, for those who are fans of the original series, I co-wrote the book Planet of the Apes Revisited, the cover for the book is on the right below. Book's out of print, so I'm not trying to make sales here, just thought I'd mention it. POTA was my Star Wars.

I always hated these movies. The remake was better IMO than the originals, but it was still stupid.

I apologize POTA lovers. And Ed Gross that is definitely way awesome.....it's really the whole remake thing. Gets on my nerves.

Reboots on the other hand....Daredevil?? Thanks

EdGross - 5/20/2010, 10:16 PM
gaikinger: I hear she's got the time now.

JohnClayBurchett: No apologies necessary. I'm sick of the remake thing myself, but I have such a love of Planet of the Apes that I'm hopeful they can pull it off.

grif: Thanks, and I know how anti-EM you are, but if you were to pop over there just to look, you'd see just how much news is being posted a day. CBM has plenty of users to provide content, but EM is constant work by very few people at this point and it needs whatever push it can get to bring people over to it.

I love the twist ending of the novel, but there is absolutely no way it would work on screen...

This sounds interesting, because we won't be rehashing the same well-known twist ending, and trying to make the audience surprised when *gasp*, the're actually on Earth...

I can't wait to see this one, I actaully did not mind the Tim Burton one, its a fine popcorn movie. I think they are taking this one the right way by going for the origins and seeing where it all started. I enjoy watching peter parkers friend in all of his movies, this should be no different. I will be waiting for this movie. :D

Planet of the Apes again? Whats with the remakes? Has hollywood ran out of original ideas?

For example, I would like to see the french author Pierre Boulle other novels adapted into film(Pierre wrote the novel Planet of the apes before a film ever was considered).

Only two were ever adapted. 1957's "The bridge over the river Kwai" and of course "POTA".

REBOOT MADNESS...

One thing about the Burton version: it definitely made a lot of money and proved that people were into the concept of Planet of the Apes, but I think it was derided so much by the critics and even the people who went to see it that it made a sequel seem like a bad idea. This version is going to be lower budgeted and, one would think, carefully made.

What it actually reminds me of the Star Trek franchise. Star Trek: The Motion Picture came out in 1979, made A LOT of money despite the critical and audience drubbing it took, and then Paramount made The Wrath of Khan which was superior in every way, and while it didn't make as much as the first film, it's lower budget ensured a greater profit. Perhaps history will repeat itself with Rise of the Apes.
