Johnny Depp the new Doctor Who!

New rumors that Johnny Depp will be playing the Doctor in a big-screen "Doctor Who" movie.

Tor.Com claims that Johnny Depp has been cast to play the Doctor in a 2012 feature film, and that Russell T. Davies may be the writer.

In fact, the original source of this rumor is a site called PubArticles (but that post has been taken down). But Tor.Com quotes from the now-deleted PubArticles post.

Russell T. Davies is quoted as saying:

"There will be brand new concepts and the film will be just as adventurous, scary and humorous as the television programme. But none of us working the film will forget what makes the character great and interesting and the long-time fans will not be disappointed because yes, the Daleks make an appearance."

That article also adds that the Doctor travels throughout history curing illnesses that have been caused by aliens, including the Bubonic Plague.

Paulley: With "unnamed movie studio sources" giving out this information on what looks like to be a rumor mill style site, im taking this all with a grain of salt. And i really don't like the idea of Depp as the Doctor.

The series is great and I cannot believe I like the new guy better than Tennant (seems more like Tom Baker - excentric, not quite as cool). But I have no desire to see a big Screen Reboot with American Actors, the last time they tried it it sucked.

And since when is the Doctor a real Doctor. Traveling through time curing diseases caused by aliens. OMFG. I hope this is just a rumor.

It's official, he can play ANYONE = Riddler, Doctor Who, Mad Hatter, Willy Wonka, Ted Eisner, Oprah, Lassie, Teabag (lol).

Depp is good, but is he THAT great? I dunno...

i think if any american actor played it, it wouldn't be as good. Tennant would have been great, they should have capitolized on him while he was playing it. the new actor is really good, but my favorite has to be tennant, he played serious better.
as for the bit about him being a "real doctor" hopefully that is just bull, that is the exact opposite of the doctors beliefs. he doesn't fix things that should happen, he obeserves time and fixes when aliens cause changes to it. that is one of his rules, if they get that wrong then they don't watch the show

depp IS that good of an actor. he can play most things and play them well. watch finding neverland and stop watching the cheesy movies he makes with tim burton. having said that, i don't want him to play this. he has the sillyness and acting chops to play the role, but he isn't british.

Depp would make a better Amanda Waller than Basset. Right?

This rumor is completely false. I am always checking Doctor Who related news and have not seen anything even remotely like this. There are in fact rumors of the possibility of a movie with either David Tennant or Matt Smith, but definitely not Depp. No wonder PubArticles had to take that post down...
And by the way @AlexDeLarge666: Doctor Who is awesome, but you have to watch all the newer episodes to really get to love it.

Real cool if its true. The last cinematic version of Dr. Who was waaaay back in the 60's I believe portrayed by Peter Cushing. However the film version has little continuity with the TV version. If this pushes through which continuity will it follow (or pay homage to) or will it bridge both.

@BryEL
Ha-ha-ha. That would be the day seeing Depp as Oprah or Lassie. X-D

This is a CROCK! People if they're going to do anything, it would be in-line with the series, MEANING a movie about the Timelord / Dalek Time Wars! That means either Christopher Eccleson, David Tennant or Matt Smith (though I doubt him with the scheduling of the TV show) would be the good Doctor. Also if anything, they'd probably bring back Paul McGann (since the Wars did supposedly happen during his reign), which would be JUST FINE with me because I think he was robbed of his 'due and proper' because of the crappy US response to the Fox TV movie!
