Godzilla vs. Kong vastly exceeded expectations at the box office in the midst of the pandemic last year, and while we haven't heard much about Legendary Pictures' "MonsterVerse" plans since, a sequel is officially in development. Whether the follow-up will involve Godzilla remains to be seen, however, especially as Toho has plans to expand the franchise with its own Japanese-based productions.
Legendary is teaming up with Apple for a Monarch TV series set between the events of Godzilla and Godzilla: King of the Monsters, though the belief is that it will focus on other kaiju.
MovieNews.net (via SFFGazette.com) is now reporting that this Godzilla vs. Kong sequel may be Son of Kong, and not a movie that pits the two iconic monsters against each other for a rematch. The site speculates that Legendary may be gearing up to start shooting Monarch, so we'll have to wait and see.
While it's a shame to think we might not see more of Godzilla in the MonsterVerse, further exploring Kong's story (or, in this instance, his son) is a compelling prospect. The hope is still that Adam Wingard will direct the project, though we can't say for sure whether he'll have time in the near future.
"Son of Kong" is Godzilla vs. Kong 2's working title, anyway, and we'd bet on this movie exploring the great ape's place in Hollow Earth. There are plenty of other kaiju that Kong's son can fight, of course, and it's hard to imagine where another clash between those beasts could go based on what we saw last year.
