GODZILLA x KONG: THE NEW EMPIRE Opens To Mighty $8 Million On Thursday But Now Has A Dreaded Rotten Splat

Early box office numbers are in for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, and while it's off to a strong start after Thursday previews, things aren't looking quite as good over over Rotten Tomatoes right now.

UPDATE: Updated numbers confirm Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire scored $10 million in previews, a franchise-best for the MonsterVerse!

Madame Web might have flopped, but it's been a successful start to the year for other genres, including movies like Dune: Part Two and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire

Now, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is rampaging into theaters across the globe and, according to Deadline, it's off to a strong start in North America with an estimated $8 million haul from Thursday previews which started at 3pm.

That's the second-best Thursday for a MonsterVerse movie and is beaten only by the $9.3 million earned by Gareth Edwards' Godzilla. The 2014 movie would go on to make $93.1 million during its opening weekend, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire may well exceed the estimated $50 million debut we first heard about earlier this week.

[SPOILER] Returns From The Dead In Shock Twist

Unfortunately, things aren't looking quite so positive over on Rotten Tomatoes. After debuting with a "Fresh" score, the Godzilla vs. Kong sequel has since slipped to a "Rotten" 55%.

That makes Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire the second worst-reviewed MonsterVerse movie and places it in front of Godzilla: King of the Monsters' 42%. Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla, and Godzilla vs. Kong all have 76%, though Monarch: Legacy of Monsters (an Apple TV+ series) beats them all with a mighty 89%.

Will bad reviews put people off? Probably not. However, it might not hurt for the next movie to enlist a new director with a fresh take on these Titans.

Are you heading to theaters to watch Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire this weekend?

The epic battle continues!  Legendary Pictures' cinematic Monsterverse follows up the explosive showdown of 'Godzilla vs. Kong' with an all-new adventure that pits the almighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence—and our own. 'Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire' delves further into the histories of these Titans and their origins, as well as the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, while uncovering the mythic battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and tied them to humankind forever.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire stars returning Godzilla vs. Kong actors Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, and Kaylee Hottle alongside Dan Stevens (Legion), Alex Ferns (The Batman), and Fala Chen (Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings).

The screenplay is by Terry Rossio (Godzilla vs. Kong) and Simon Barrett (You’re Next) and Jeremy Slater (Moon Knight), from a story by Rossio & Wingard & Barrett, based on the character "Godzilla" owned and created by TOHO Co., Ltd.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is now playing in theaters.

Is there any chance that the Japanese can make a Kong movie? I'd love to see their modern interpretation of it with everything they're doing with Godzilla.

@Fares - they'd need the license. Tohoku is actually going to focus on anime, that was always their plan. The live action film wasn't really their focus ironically.

@Godzilla2000Zer - I bet there's some wiggle room to be explored where you can get away with making a movie about a Giant ape-like creature that isn't named Kong without needing a license.

@Fares - Technically you ready can but after so many expensive lawsuits over the term Kong for years I'm guessing they rather be safe and wait a bit. I'd totally be down for a new Toho Kong whenever that becomes possible.

It’s at 56% right now from 124 reviews so I think it could end up in the mid 50’s-early 60’s range which would make the critical reception “ mixed-mixed to positive”which isn’t bad for this type of film imo.

Anyway , seeing it tomorrow since my Godzilla loving cousin already had bought tickets so looking forward to it!!.

@TheVisionary25 - Dude if anyone actually thought Godzilla x Kong was going to garner high Rotten Score then they are an idiot. Godzilla minus one was deliberately made to be a piece of art. this and the previous films in the franchise are solely for popcorn fun and excitement. somethings like this will always be critic proof cause its not meant to be consumed with a critical snobbish eye.

Script felt like it was written in a weekend. A lot of forced humor. Villains didn't feel menacing at all. Big step back from the previous movie. Really lazy film.

Dreaded? For who? It is what it is. Stop trying to throw shade at it and also stop trying to spoil the movie so people don’t go and see it.

The story is focused on Kong and how he fits into Hollow Earth, so don't expect much. This is definitely like the mid 90's godzilla movies with schlock galore, but I didn't hate it. It's better than KOTM (hated the human element in that) and it's on par with Godzklla v Kong. Ice Zilla was sweet but like it said, it's an a to b story with some decent cgi. At least they didn't take it serious lol, mini Kong was cool and Mothra was pretty sweet. If you like these movies, go see it otherwise just wait for the disc

RT is a broken aggregate and it's designed to pass mediocrity onto the consumer without really knowing, use a real rating system to see the actual quality of the film, like imdb or metacritic. Maybe I'll bring back the thumbs, idc if its copyright, I'll find a work around lol

@dragon316 - well, yes, they do haha
There are tens of Godzilla films with themes about science, politics, nature, and more, with characters that serve to illustrate those themes. Just because you're making a franchise blockbuster doesn't mean you give up on basic story elements such as dialogue that doesn't insult the intelligence.
[frick] Minus One, Godzilla vs the Sea Monster has characters that drive the plot, have stakes, and clever dialogue. Almost like someone actually cared about the intelligence of the audience. I've made this point before, and probably will again. If you can't see that a movie doesn't have to be stupid and entirely formulaic because it exists within a franchise or features larger than life concepts, then I'm really sorry, I don't know what to tell you. There is certainly a difference between the original Godzilla, King Kong vs Godzilla, Godzilla vs Kong Ghidorah, GMK, Minus One and Godzilla Vs Kong.

Debating whether I want to see this in theaters or wait. The big monster fighting is fun, but this one looks really silly. Godzilla 2014 and Skull Island are still my favorite in this franchise.
Slotherin
Slotherin - 4/1/2024, 7:46 AM
@mountainman - see it! It's not gonna hit as hard out of theaters.
They should have held off on showing so much in trailers but there's a lot of treasures they didn't spoil as well.
Kong gets a lot of good action and screentime, they show some previously teased Titans a bit more and they spend more of their time focused on the kaiju quite wisely.
While I hope they scale back whatever comes next, this rewarded a lot of what King of the Monsters teased but then never touched in GvK
Slotherin
Slotherin - 4/1/2024, 7:48 AM
@mountainman - it follows up some of what Skull Island set up pretty decently. It definitely is the silliest Monsterverse film yet though Skar King is an absolute bastard, especially upon analysis
