As soon as he's finished working on 2016's planned Star Wars spin-off, Gareth Edwards will return to direct the sequel to Legendary's hit 2014 movie Godzilla.

Deadline confirms that Legendary Pictures has closed a deal with Godzilla scribe Max Borenstein to return to write the sequel. This isn't really a surprise after the success of the first instalment, and the studio  have also tapped him to write King Kong prequel, Skull Island.

THOR's Tom Hiddleston will star in that movie with Jordan Vogt-Roberts directing.
Borenstein also wrote upcoming fantasy flick Seventh Son for Legendary and that will be released next year. Godzilla 2 (that's just the working title) is set to be released on June 8th, 2018.

Gareth Edwards directed Godzilla, which stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass), Oscar nominee Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai, Inception), Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene), Oscar winner Juliette Binoche (The English PatientCosmopolis), and Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine), with Oscar nominee David Strathairn (Good Night, and Good Luck. The Bourne Legacy) and Bryan Cranston (Argo, TV's Breaking Bad). It hit DVD and Blu-ray on September 16th.

Which monsters will we see in Godzilla 2? Well, you can find that out by clicking here!

This film is going to kick so much ass.

Calling it now, it will be the best non-CBM of 2018.

I read the prequel comic and there was an island called "Monstua Island" Godzilla and some other creature fought on it. I think the comic actually enhanced Ken Watanabe's character and his connection to Godzilla.

Just bought the 3D bluray yesterday. I'll get around to watching it this weekend hopefully, that bootlegged copy was very crappy. Aaron wasn't that bad but he could really use some skills when it comes to emotion from him. I still love the guy as Kick-Ass. Hopefully we get more monster battles/sightings in the next one.

How about making the sequel were Godzilla is not an after thought.

DrunkenNukem - Now I can see Gipsy Danger taking on King Kong, but Godzilla? That's just a massive stomp in Godzilla's favour!

"Aaron wasn't that bad but he could really use some skills when it comes to emotion from him."

@TheRationalNerd I've seen people bring that up, but I think that was exactly the point. He's a soldier, so he's trained to not be all that emotionally-available. And the backstory he's given with his mother's tragic death (and how he tells his father that he "doesn't want to hear about it" in regards to his father's guilt over her death) helps explain why he's not exactly the type of person to emote all that much.

So I think it was only natural that he was a bit bland. Still, I definitely would've preferred it if Bryan Cranston's character had at least lived a little while longer rather than having Aaron's character become the main protagonist.

I liked the first one but I see why a lot of people had a problem with it. And if you look at the numbers you can see that opening weekend a lot of folks were all about that movie. But for a movie to make 95 million it's opening weekend and then go on to do barely double that number for it's entire duration in theaters shows that people got turned off. And we all know the reasons - the Cranston bait and switch, Godzilla fight teases in lieu of actual fights, boring and/or bizarre character moments (seriously, who would tell their loved ones to wait while giant monsters are heading for your home?).

So when you couple that with a four year delay in between movies, they've got some hurdles to overcome. Hopefully they listen to the [rational] complaints and make the appropriate changes. If they're including four monsters in the next one you HAVE to see Godzilla for more than 10 minutes. And for God's sake, slim the beast down a little. He's cg. He doesn't HAVE to look like a guy in a rubber suit.

@SauronsBANE

Yeah, I understand your points clearly. I gues his character didn't have that "weight" that Cranston's had.

(Spoilers) I could see why everyone was mad when he died (End Spoilers)

But yeah, other than that the Muto's were pretty lame. Can't wait to see a real challenge for the beast in the next installment.

Interesting strategy. Bring back the writer of the terrible first installment to write the next one. Quality is obviously not one of their priorities. Tom Hiddleston will "star"? Should we take that to mean he'll die in the first act a la Bryan Cranston?

@TheRationalNerd Yep I hear you. Cranston definitely is a better actor and his character was much more relatable, plus all the marketing made it seem like he was the main character.

And I thought the MUTO designs were pretty cool, and the backstory of them needing to feed on radioactive materials was interesting...but yeah, they were a bit lacking. All of their fights with Godzilla basically amounted to large-scale wrestling. It'll be nice to see a more legitimate threat in the sequel.

By far the best movie of 2014 so far with the exception of Apes! As a true Godzilla fan since my earliest memories I have loved all the movies (except that 98 piece of garbage). This is also one of the best in series and an overall great film. It is homage to its roots and true to the Godzilla spirit, even if he is only in it for 10minutes.

I can totally understand the average movie goers expectations for the movie and the disappointment that would come from the lack of the monster, (SPOILER!!!) early death of Cranston, and the main character's lack of direction. However Edwards was trying to be true to the original and 85 films where Godzilla is only the sub focus of the film yet the main threat/idea. In today's movie market that isn't what most people seem to be interested in, they only want more eye candy. Yes the using Cranston as the focus of the trailers was the ultimate bs tease and there is nothing more to add. Finally don't give crap to Aaron Taylor Johnson, he was suppose to act as the emotionally distant soldier. How many of you have friends who are soldiers? I have many and while the majority are not like him I do have several who have changed and do not act socially around people even in times that requires them to. To me he was just an average soldier with bad luck.

The thing people need to realize for the sequel is that Godzilla was fully shown in the 1st movie so there is no reason to hide him in the sequel so with the negative complaints about screen time its guaranteed that he will way more scenes. The other confirmed monsters also don't hold the attention that Godzilla does so there is no reason to hide them with, perhaps the exception of Ghidorah for the grand finale. While Gareth did say he was going to shoot it the same way I feel it will be the same way the action scenes would be which were amazing!
