Godzilla Minus Zero Stills Reveal First Look At King Ghidorah And A Shocking Change To Kaiju's [Spoiler]

King Ghidorah's long-awaited Godzilla Minus Zero debut comes with a major twist, as director Takashi Yamazaki—and new stills—reveal why the iconic three-headed Kaiju will initially look very different.

Godzilla Minus Zero's trailers have kept King Ghidorah under wraps, but following a recent merchandise leak, we now have an early first look at some official stills (via SFFGazette.com) from the highly anticipated sequel.

There are some jaw-dropping shots of the iconic Kaiju floating around on social media, including the Kaiju standing atop traditional Japanese architecture, and a first look at what promises to be an epic showdown with Godzilla. Many of these are being hit with copyright strikes ahead of Godzilla Minus Zero's opening, so we've included what we can find below.

However, filmmaker Takashi Yamazaki is taking an interesting approach to the monster's portrayal: King Ghidorah will initially be portrayed with one head, not three.

"I had originally intended for the creature to appear with three heads from the very beginning," Yamazaki revealed. "However, Minami Ichikawa from Toho suggested, 'Wouldn't it be interesting if the number of heads increased to three at some point?' When I considered this, I realised it was a perfect opportunity to clearly illustrate the creature's evolutionary process."

The director continued, "Simply having a monster grow larger—as is often the case in kaiju films—doesn't really convey a sense of true transformation. But by depicting the tail splitting in two and new heads sprouting forth—evolving into the iconic form of King Ghidorah that everyone recognises—we were able to heighten the sense of despair."

It's a fascinating approach, and many fans have pointed out that the evolved King Ghidorah appears to have taken on a similar form to Godzilla. What exactly leads to that happening is a mystery to us for now.

War reduced Japan to zero, and Godzilla plunged it into minus. In Godzilla Minus Zero, two years have passed since then, and the country has faced agonizing struggles to achieve recovery and finally reclaim its daily life. Just as humanity managed to cling to a hard-won peace, a new threat strikes, crushing hope in an instant. There is no third time. Everything ends here.

Directed by Takashi Yamazaki, the movie stars Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Kuranosuke Sasaki, Jun Kunimura, Miou Tanaka, Sakura Ando, Masami Nagasawa, Min Tanaka, and Hidetaka Yoshioka.

Shot entirely in Japan as the first-ever Japanese production filmed for IMAX, Godzilla Minus Zero was shot with high-definition digital cameras certified by IMAX, and optimised in sound and imagery unique to IMAX screens. The globally beloved monster returns to movie theater screens, reaching greater and more terrifying heights, making Godzilla Minus Zero a true cinematic event not to be missed.

Godzilla Minus Zero arrives in theaters on November 6.

So is Ghidorah one monster or three? Let the debate rage....

I saw it yesterday. Unfortunately, without spoilers, it didn’t land for me at all. All the issues with the first one (mainly hammy acting, bad script—things subtitles help hide overseas) are magnified, with none of the approach that helped me overlook those first time out—I did really like -1. If you thought there wasn’t enough Godzilla in the first one I have some real bad news for you too.

@RealTurner - I was so let down by that opening of the first film, it felt like a B-movie and not because of the effects, just how it was shot. The film in general was just fine. Was nice not to get annoying human characters for once, aside from the grey haired dude with the glasses, he just pissed me off and stood out like a sore thumb as he does in this new one. The actual Godzilla action in that first one (other than that brief moment where they're being chased at sea, the action just felt very been there done that. Shin is my favourite and left a much stronger impression. Sucks they never continued with that.

@HashTagSwagg - I think -1 gets a little overglazed because subs hide the worst parts. There are some terrible scenes in English/with American characters in the new movies, and that's basically the same acting level as the entire cast, you just don't feel it if you don't speak Japanese. Meanwhile, in Shin (which is also one of my favorites), the dumb "next American President" who can barely speak English lol is an outlier rather than fitting in.

Unfortunately Noda (the grey-haired dude who is, yes, simply awful, both as a character and the actor playing him) is probably in the new one more than Shikishima. He's definitely in it more than Godzilla lol. There's a major turning point in the story and a massive crisis going on, and the next scene is the small department assigned to the problem all clumping back into their boring-looking office with zero sense of urgency at all. Total misfire on almost every level; effects still pretty great but it would help if they were showing us stuff we wanted to see.

@HashTagSwagg - Agree about Shin as well. What few reviews there have been of -0 seem happy to glaze it with the same brush as the first one but we'll see once some more come out. I didn't think it was anywhere close to the same level.
