It Sounds Like PACIFIC RIM 2 May Never Happen As It's Put On Indefinite Hold

Word has come out that Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim sequel hasn't just been put on hold and pushed back as was recently rumoured: it may now never happen at all!

According to a very interesting piece over at The Hollywood Reporter, there's some tension between Universal and Legendary which has led to the Pacific Rim sequel potentially being scrapped for good.

This isn't the first Guillermo del Toro film the two studios have clashed over, as Universal refused to pay for half of Crimson Peak earlier this year because they don't believe that the R-Rated horror movie will be able to regain its budget. You can't blame them for being cautious either. Pacific Rim grossed $411 million worldwide, but cost so much that a sequel was never a sure thing. If it wasn't for China, it would have been an outright flop, and Universal's lack of interest in the property means the following: "Sources say Legendary liked that the original performed exceptionally well in China, where the company is heavily invested, but for now the project — which had been ramping up to make a release date in August 2017 — has been halted indefinitely and will be pushed back (if it gets made at all)."

So, things aren't looking good for the sequel at this point. Check out my review of Pacific Rim by clicking here

I can't honestly pretend I didn't enjoy that film...

Oh man I really hope he doesn't choose Hellboy 3 as his new project instead of JLD though... that would [frick]ing suck.

Del Toro won't immediately jump to another movie if Pacific Rim 2 is cancelled. Imagine having not one, but two of your dream projects cancelled in the same year (Silent Hills and possibly Pacific Rim 2), he's gonna need a moment.

Shit news. I liked the first and was looking forward to the sequel.

Well, I guess he can focus on JLD and the DCEU as a whole.

@ComicsBornAndBred dude, here's a quote from Del Toro back when he left JLD and decided to do Pacific Rim 2: "Warners liked the script, they were very enthusiastic and wanted to green-light it but they wanted it to coincide with the shoot of Pacific Rim 2. I was put in a very difficult place facing a difficult choice, and I chose to do Pacific Rim 2."

Del Toro at this point is synonym of cancellation, even Konami canceled Silent HillS... dammit.

Pacific Rim was the best "Godzilla" film ever made.

Those who didn't like it probably didn't grow up appreciating monster movies or anime/mecha flicks.

Pacific Rim was nothing short of artistically brilliant.
I sincerely hope this article is nothing more than troll-worthy b.s.

It's crazy, had Guillermo decided to make Justice League Dark instead we be getting that film sooner and now even this won't be coming out. So I hope Guillermo goes and makes JLD next. Then George Miller can make another DC film instead. Hopefully something to do with Martian Manhunter, because I don't think David Goyer is a part of the DCEU anymore.

Maybe Legendary and PacRim2 will just move over to WB like Skull Island. Then they can have a Godzila/Kong/PacRim universe. Too bad they can't have Hellboy in JLD, lol. Hellboy 2 was awesome.

Pacific Rim is terrible if you have no idea or concept of what a giant monster movie is.
