PACIFIC RIM: UPRISING Director Planned For Third Film To Tie Into GODZILLA VS. KONG's MonsterVerse

A Pacific Rim/MonsterVerse crossover makes sense for a long list of reasons, and Uprising helmer Steven S. DeKnight (Daredevil) had hoped to make that happen if Pacific Rim 3 ultimately become a reality!

Neither of the Pacific Rim films made too significant an impact the global box office, but they weren't flops, and the franchise has a devoted fanbase. Netflix is even making an anime series, but it's looking unlikely that a third chapter will reach the big screen in the near future.

Had it happened, however, Pacific Rim: Uprising director Steven S. DeKnight had ambitious plans for the threequel to tie into the MonsterVerse which films like Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla vs. Kong call home.

It wasn't something the studio agreed to (at least not at this early stage), and DeKnight admits it wasn't until the end of the film that some sort of crossover would have been teased. The filmmaker doesn't get specific, unfortunately, but Godzilla stepping through a "Breach" to do battle with some Jaegers would have been nothing short of epic.

It also feels like the logical next step for the MonsterVerse after Godzilla and King Kong go to war, but with that film heading to HBO Max, it's unclear what Warner Bros. has planned for the franchise.

After all, without box office revenue as a measuring stick, it's possible the studio will put the brakes on any further sequels or spinoffs (Godzilla vs. Kong was a major box office disappointment, remember).

How big are the Jaegers, compared to Godzilla? Surely they would be stomped on...

Sounds about as well thought out and coherent as the second film. I'm not a big fan of the first one either but at least it tried for some world building; the second one was happy to just crap all over it.

@RealTurner - The second one felt like Disney Channel original movie. All it was missing was John Boyega using a wand to make the Mickey Mouse logo for the intro.

@KWilly - I wondered multiple times if they even bothered rewatching the first one before they scripted number two. They really just gutted it. Not how you build a lasting franchise.

No crossover so I'm happy it didn't happen well unless GDT was the one doing it

Good thing it didn't. The first Pacific Rim I found underwhelming, and the second was a real dud with god awful unnecessarily young characters.

I loved the first movie and the second was just eh, I wish we were getting this partially but at the same time PR and the Tone of the monster verse really don’t match up

@solskulldeath - nah, it was stupidly terrible

@TheShape9859 - you thought it was stupid because you're not even a mecha fan. that is why you said it stupid....stupid.

I really don't know how that would work. There's a pretty clear distinction between the Kaiju in pacific rim compared to the titans in the monsterverse. It really wouldn't make sense for them to be in the same universe. So it would have to be a multiverse story, which really doesn't seem necessary. You can just as easily create a godzilla like kaiju for pacific rim and have giant robots in the next godzilla (it's already looking like mecha godzilla will be in gvk).

How would that work, the first Pacific Rim was a WarnerBros/Legendary production and the terrible Pacific Rim Uprising was a Universal/Legendary production, as far as I know the deal is still with Universal now and the Monsterverse is WB. I don't believe it, first they're completely different Worlds, the WB Monsterverse is silly but feels more realistic than the Pacific Rim world, Pacific Rim Uprising was a bad Power Rangers film, the Worlds don't mesh at all.

ARMUS - 2/13/2021, 6:57 AM
@ARMUS - When WB announced they were making "The Meg" I thought maybe it'll fit into the Monsterverse, Eli Roth was attached at the time but OMG that film turned out to be absolutely horrible.
LameLuka
LameLuka - 2/13/2021, 8:11 AM
@ARMUS - the Monsterverse is owned by Legendary, WB is just the parters that help distribute the movies. So it doesn't matter who owns it, that crossover could still happen
LameLuka
LameLuka - 2/13/2021, 8:12 AM
@ARMUS - Considering it made 530 milion I don't think WB gives a damn if people hated it or not. Plus its getting a sequel

Uprising sucked. Wasted talent in that.

Both pacific rims were cool but they aren't good enough to cross over with any godzilla franchise especially not the new one. King of the monsters was F*cking bananas(best english language disaster film of all time). Enen if the pr films get on that level it wouldn't be a fun crossover because godzilla would just murder all of the jeagers then go through the breach and start destroying the precursors. if you make a film where godzilla actually wants to destroy earth/humanity you don't have earth/humanity alive for a sequel

I would love for Del Toro to make a Godzilla movie from this new Legendary franchise.

With Boyega's characterz proclaiming at tge end of Uprising they're going after the Kaiju, I kinda just assumed they would follow them through the Breachworld into Godzilla's universe where the Jaegers and Godzilla work together to beat the living shit out of some Kaiju

So they can put in a new version of Mecha Godzilla, Moguera, and Jet Jaguar. Come to think of it Jaegar does sound like Jet Jaguar for short lol ...I'll stop now before I start 😁

After the truly terrible second film. No thanks. Any further Pacific rim live-action stuff should be solely handled by GDT or no one.

I can already see it. The Jaegers & Kong are struggling against a slew of new Kaijus from a new Breach. Just when they are about to be killed, Godzilla shows up, blasts all of them away with his atomic blast, and the day is saved.

It's literally like Superman showing up to save the JL.

Should have continue working on Daredevil instead, same with Drew Goddard.
