After becoming the first-ever Indian film to launch its first at San Diego Comic-Con last summer, Vyjayanthi Movies have released the official final trailer for Kalki 2898 AD.
The upcoming sci-fi epic, directed by Nag Ashwin (Yevade Subramanyam; Mahanati; Pitta Kathalu), is expected to be the first installment in a planned Kalki Cinematic Universe and is reportedly the second-most expensive Indian film ever produced with an estimated ₹600 crore (US$72 million) production budget.
While plot details remain relatively scarce, a brief synopsis describes the ambitious film as such, "Set against the backdrop of Indian mythology and a dystopian society in the desertified city of Kasi in 2898 AD, the only city now known to exist, ruled by a totalitarian elite, Supreme Yaskin, from a hovering megastructure above it known as the Complex. The film chronicles a journey spanning millennia, from the events of the Mahabharata in the year 3102 BC, the beginning of Kali Yuga, to 2898 CE. The core of the narrative revolves around the enigmatic figure of Kalki, the tenth and final avatar of the Hindu deity Vishnu."
Kalki 2898 AD will be released worldwide in Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and English languages, and in addition to standard screens, the film will also be released in IMAX premium formats.
The cast features Prabhas ("Bhairava"), Amitabh Bachchan ("Ashwatthama"), Kamal Haasan ("Supreme Yaskin"), Deepika Padukone ("SUM-80"), Disha Patani, Rajendra Prasad, Saswata Chatterjee ("Commander Manas"), Brahmanandam ("Rajan"), Pasupathy ("Veeran"), Anna Ben ("Kyra"), Shobhana, Keerthy Suresh ("BU-JZ-1"), and Anant Vidhaat Sharma.
Prabhas, the "Rebel Star," is best known to global audiences for his lead role in S. S. Rajamouli's worldwide phenomenon Baahubali: The Beginning and its sequel Baahubali 2: The Conclusion. His recent credits also include Adipurush and Salaar: Part 1 - Ceasefire.
Bachchan is one of India's most legendary actors, having starred in over 200 films throughout his illustrious career. His more prominent credits include, but are not limited to, Sholay, Don, Mohabbatein, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Khakee, Veer-Zaara, Black, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, and Piku.
Padukone is arguably India's top actress at the moment and has headlined several blockbuster successes over her career, including Om Shanti Om, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Chennai Express, Happy New Year, xXx: The Return of Xander Cage, Pathaan, Jawan, and, most recently, Fighter. She's also slated to appear in Singham Again later this year.
