As audiences take their seats for Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis in Cannes, we have a big update on the status of the movie's theatrical release.

Despite speculation that the legendary Godfather director's self-funded passion project might struggle to find a distributor (there was already some concern before the recent controversies), it's just been announced that the sci-fi epic has been given a global IMAX release.

“The film is going to get an IMAX release,” IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond told the press during a Cannes event earlier today. “One of the things that we pride ourselves on is being filmmaker-friendly. So we’ve committed to Francis to do a global Imax release.”

Gelford added that he'd met with Coppola in Cannes, and that they would most likely wait to see who will distribute the film in the U.S. and when before deciding on a theatrical release date. The film has already sold to multiple international territories.

This week, The Guardian published a report elaborating on the behind-the-scenes turmoil we've been hearing about during the movie's supposedly chaotic shoot, which allegedly included Coppola sitting in his trailer smoking weed for hours on end while the cast and crew were waiting to film, and pulling scantily clad or naked female extras onto his lap and attempting to kiss them to "get them in the mood."

There was speculation that this report may hinder the movie's chances of finding a distributor, but that doesn't appear to be the case.

The reactions from an early insider screening were divisive. One viewer described the film as "unflinching in how batshit it is," noting that it has "zero commercial prospects," while another called it a mix of "Ayn Rand, Metropolis, and Caligula."

However, a more positive verdict stated: "Coppola's new film is crackling with ideas that fuse the past with the future, with an epic and highly visual fable that plays perfectly on an IMAX screen. He covers complex themes in a remarkably brief two hours and 13 minutes, not including credits."

We're sure to hear a lot more about Megalopolis just a few hours from now, so stay tuned for updates.

"An accident destroys a New York City-like metropolis already in decay. Caesar, an idealist, aims to rebuild the city as a sustainable utopia, while the venal mayor, Frank Cicero, has other plans. Coming between the opposing men and their visions is Frank’s socialite daughter, Julia. Tired of the attention and power she was born with, Julia searches for her life’s meaning."

Megalopolis stars Adam Driver, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jason Schwartzman, Grace VanderWaal, Kathryn Hunter, Talia Shire, Dustin Hoffman, and D.B. Sweeney.

Hadn't heard about the controversy, but my gut says that wasn't weed keeping him in that trailer for hours....

An alleged (by me...) cocaine fueled Francis Ford Coppola movie might actually make for a fun and wild film to watch.

@Itwasme - Yeah, my only takeaway was how "journalists" like watching a dumpster fire burn.

Cool!!.

The movie certainly LOOKS gorgeous but I can see how it might too “out there” for a general audience aswell so I don’t see it doing well..

The cast is good though and I’m intrigued enough to give it a shot!!.

Sounds like a colossal bore disguised as a spectacle. Looks like a Cloud Atlas sequel.

Hollywood director is a perv? Par for the course.

@HermanM - what’s with all the hate for cloud atlas? Damn as far as I’m concerned the movie was ahead of it’s time.

@HermanM - I see. We will have to agree to disagree on that one. It’s my affinity for the wachowski siblings (dare I label them as anything else😆) and existential/meta science fiction storytelling that I love which is why I like the film so much.

Hearing that it’s 2 hours and 13 minutes is good news. A movie like this could have been a 3+ hour slog to get through, but the shorter run time may make it tighter and more narrative focused.

If you love movies, it shouldnt be a problem. All of a sudden everyone is a critic. Take it as you go. You either like it or you dont. You Spend money to be entertained or you do something else worth your while. Stop complaining if you decide to watch a movie. Its a movie. Plain and simple.
