OBLIVION: Alternate Designs For The Scavengers And Their Weaponry

The talented Ed Natividad, has been featured on CBM in the past for his work on The Amazing Spider-Man and Green Lantern, but today I wanted to showcase his wonderful designs for the elusive scavengers that appear in Joseph Kosinski's Oblivion.

If you haven't seen the film then skip this introduction and just view the images, or just click back. I will discuss spoilers here. Also, go see the movie, it's pretty good.

Much of what Tom Cruise's character (Jack) knows in the film, turns out to be a flatout lie. One major revelation, is that the alien scavengers (scavs) aren't actually aliens at all. They turn out to be humans, lead by always wonderful, Morgan Freeman. Sure, they disguise themselves, resembling the Sand People in Star Wars, but underneath the mask and armor is a human being. Heck, they even walk on all fours and use voice modulators just to conceal their humanity from the evil, all-seeing drones.

Well, come take a look at some alternate versions of the Scav costumes illustrated by artist, Ed Natividad. As well as, designs of the Scavs' weaponry and vehicles, like a dog sled.

Tom Cruise stars in OBLIVION, an original and groundbreaking cinematic event from the director of TRON: Legacy and the producer of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. On a spectacular future Earth that has evolved beyond recognition, one mans confrontation with the past will lead him on a journey of redemption and discovery as he battles to save mankind.

Jack Harper (Cruise) is one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on Earth. Part of a massive operation to extract vital resources after decades of war with a terrifying threat known as the Scavs, Jacks mission is nearly complete. Living in and patrolling the breathtaking skies from thousands of feet above, his soaring existence is brought crashing down when he rescues a beautiful stranger from a downed spacecraft. Her arrival triggers a chain of events that forces him to question everything he knows and puts the fate of humanity in his hands.

OBLIVION was directed by Joseph Kosinski, from a screenplay written by Karl Gajdusek and Michael deBruyn. The cast includes: Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman, Olga Kurylenko, Andrea Riseborough, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Melissa Leo. It lands in theaters April 19, 2013!

The think the film woulda did better as a more humble and modest fall release. Pitching it as a summer-style blockbuster undermines it I think. I love sci-fi films with that kind of Rod Serling appeal to it. But I could tell people were expecting a sci-fi action romp by the silence in the theater when it ended. It's a shame, because I think it has some smart qualities. There are things I still don't understand about it. Makes for a good rental later on.

MrYurMomm: Interesting, but it really is more like Moon - the more explosive version, that is - than anything else. A man assigned to a mission, which is then revealed to be a big lie (in each their own way), and it turns out that he has multiple clones living under the same lie.

But as much as I love Moon, that fact doesn't bother me at all. Kosinski's still a master of visual, and also great soundtrack. But aside of that, his directing ability has also improved pretty much from Tron: Legacy, although he still has to learn how to express dramatic punches better. And yes, this movie deserves an art book, which most likely will be a great read. Jack's chopper, the station, and Tet are the elements I'd like to see the concept art of the most. Great find, nail.

Nailbiter this is an awesome find. Natividad is one of the best in the business. @Fearless, my first thought was the Predator masks. Those are iconic designs by Stan Winston.
