POWER RANGERS Opens To A Solid $40.5 Million, While LOGAN Crosses $200 Million Domestic

Lionsgate's Power Rangers reboot is off to a morphinomenal start in the States, debuting to a very strong $40.5 million. Plus, Hugh Jackman's Logan has crossed another major milestone!

Not much was expected from Lionsgate's Power Rangers reboot ahead of release, but thanks to a very strong fan response, which includes an "A" Cinemascore, the film has managed to surprise, exceeding expectations on its way to a morphinomenal $40.5 million domestic haul.

If the estimates hold, the Dean Israelite-directed film will have already passed the lifetime grosses of both Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie and Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie. It should also become the fourth-straight $40M+ opener this March.

Internationally, the Rangers reboot didn't fare quite as well as it did in the States, taking in just over $18.7 million from 62 markets, bringing its worldwide sum to just under $60 million. However, that figure should improve slightly in the coming weeks as it has yet to open in at least sixteen markets, including Japan (7/16) - where the series originates from.

This week's other offerings, Life & CHiPS, both severely underperformed with estimated $12.6 million and $7.6 million debuts, respectively.

Meanwhile, Hugh Jackman's critically acclaimed Wolverine swan song Logan crossed the $200 million mark at the domestic box office, raking in another $10.1 million over the past weekend. The James Mangold-directed film is now firmly past the $550 million mark worldwide and is slowly, but steadily, approaching the $600 million milestone.

As for the rest of the pack, Beauty and the Beast finished on top once again, dropping just -49% to pull in $88.3 million domestic. Overseas, the Emma Watson-starrer brought in another $119.2 million for an impressive worldwide total of over $690.3 million. With those kinds of numbers, it's on track to become 2017's first billion-dollar grosser. Legendary's Kong: Skull Island finished third with $14.4 million, bringing its numbers to $133.5 domestic, over $392 million worldwide.

@Superman007 - Enough movies have come out over the years that they can usually account for most variables when estimating for Sunday's box office based on Friday and Saturday's numbers. The number you hear on a weekend is always an estimate, with the final weekend numbers coming midday Monday.

@ODanil - go check it out. Even just a matinee. The movie was surprisingly awesome. It was genuinely funny at times and full of cool moments. I've seen it twice and pretty much loved it both times. It's a fantastic, fun script with great acting from everyone involved and the highlight really is the new teams chemistry. They work really really well. Support it so we can get an even more bad ass sequel with Tommy the Green Ranger and Lord Zed!

Also, OFF-TOPIC, but how do you guys think that Ghost In The Shell will be recieved by critics?

I've been thinking about it, and I honestly think there is NO WAY critics are goinf to like it, even if the fans love it, even if it makes money, the anime is so weird, it's not for the majority of western viewers at all. I see no way that Sanders could take that and make it a movie with an at least decent score on RT

I want the tomatometer to be like 85%, but I'm pretty sure It won't pass 50%.

@Mrsinister - Me too, I'm a fan of the anime and everything I've seen so far from the movie looks awesome. I just don't think critics will like it.

I do hope I'm wrong.
