PROMETHEUS Co-Writer Jon Spaihts To Script Disney's THE BLACK HOLE Remake

Disney's remake of their own 1979 sci-fi oddity The Black Hole has been given a new lease of life, as Jon Spaihts has been brought in to write the script. Oblivion/Tron Legacy helmer Joseph Kosinski is still on board as director.

Disney are moving forward with their plan to "reinvent" the 1979 sci-fi film, and have brought Prometheus co-writer Jon Spaihts on board the project to work on the script. The original movie was a strange, ambitious, but ultimately failed attempt to give the sci-fi action a philosophical twist. Although it had its moments for sure: A pretty intimidating bright red robot named Maximilian, and some very dark moments you'd be hard pressed to see in a so called kid's movie today. The Black Hole spawned toys, comic books etc but never reached the level of popularity Disney had clearly envisioned for it. The story followed a group of space explorers aboard the USS Palomino who come across a lost ship, the USS Cygnus, hovering outside a black hole. Inside the Cygnus, the explorers meet a scientist commanding an army of faceless robots, who explains that his crew deserted him as he planned to go through the black hole. The explorers soon discover that the robots are the remnants of the former crew and that the scientist has no intention of letting them leave. It's not known whether the reboot will follow the exact same story, but I don't imagine it'd deviate too much. Oblivion's Joseph Kosinski will direct.

This movie was awesome as a kid. Would love to see a remake that made sense at the end and didn't have so many plot holes . Can't wait to see what they do with Vincent and maximillion.

I love the movie and really hope they do not remake it.. Seeing the recent track record of some remakes it is not a good sign...

@Dioforio

Jon Spaihts worked on one film before Prometheus, The Darkest Hour, which stands at a 12 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

Lindelof worked on Lost, one of the best shows ever, and Star Trek 2009. Now, Brad Bird is working with him.

You tell me whose dumb as shit now

I loved this movie. Saw it in the theater when I was a kid. It was totally creepy. The build up to the ascension into the black hole was awesome. Maximilian was an awesome floating robot loaded with spinning blades at the end of his arms. Hardcore Disney at it's finest. I can't wait for the reboot. Hopefully they give it some solid science fiction in the story. Black hole knowledge has changed so much since 1979.

Sounds like this is the movie that inspired Event Horizon, which was awesome. Spaihts should NOT be blamed for what was wrong with Prometheus! His original script was great and would have made for an incredible film that would've been the perfect prequel to Alien. Lindelof is the one who ruined Prometheus by trying to turn it into a space version of Lost.
