Rose McGowan Back On For "Barbarella"

On again off again actress Rose McGowan is again in the lead to play sci fi vixen Barbarella in the upcoming remake.

Kate Beckinsale is set to be dropped from the forthcoming 'Barbarella' remake.

The British actress - who had been the frontrunner to play the lead in the erotic sci-fi film - is devastated at learning movie bosses are now lining up 'Grindhouse' beauty Rose McGowan to play the sexy superhero.

A source said: "It seemed Kate had got the part but nothing was signed and sealed. Now the word is she's going to lose out to Rose."

Beckinsale, 35, reportedly had her heart set on playing the title character - originally portrayed by Jane Fonda in the 1968 cult classic - and can't believe the role is going to someone else.

The source added to Britain's Daily Express newspaper: "The film is expected to be a really big commercial hit so it will be a blow for Kate."

Producer Dino De Laurentiis and 'Casino Royale' screenwriters Neal Purvis and Robert Wade are currently working on the script.

Meanwhile, 35-year-old McGowan is currently working on upcoming film 'Bell Jar' - while Beckinsale has four movies due for release this year, including comic book adaptation 'Whiteout'.

love Barbarella- can't see it working as a remake though- it'd be like remaking Rocky Horror (which I think they might actually be doing come to think of it)- with a big budget and Hollywood CG its kitsch charm will just make it The Adventures of Pluto Nash with added scenes of soft core eroticism(which no one in their right mind wants to see)

Rose McGowan is a much better choice for this role than Kate Beckinsale. Both physically and acting skill wise. McGowan just has that look that is much more suited for this remake. Barbarella is from an era when it was still OK for women to have a "figure". Beckinsale is just kind of a stick. I also believe Rose is better at playing a "kitsch" character because she isn't as good of an actress as Kate. Although I do believe Drew Barrymore would have been the best choice.

I was actually fairly annoyed at the switch until your post Cook, now I like the switch. The thing that I always disliked about McGowan was her lack of acting skills and I think thats what a Barbarella remake would need.

Is there anything Rose McGowan does that ISN'T concidered soft porn??? And for me, Berrymore looks too much like Joan Cusack to by any kind of attractive. Now Beckinsale's a hot number! But i agree that she could use a bit more meat on her though :)

actually I've just re-read that sentence.. and yeah, it is a bit wrong..
John Cusack, however, is a different story altogether..
I think Kate Beckinsale would be too serious and thespy to play Barbarella (although few would deny how could she looks in a catsuit)- although come to think of it, Jane Fonda did do a lot of serious roles as well

ive never seen barbarella but if rose is in it im the first 2 go see it...she is so sexy and a talented actress when shes not makin a stupid joke.and she does have a nice rack
