Sleeper Hit of the Summer District 9 Takes The Number 1 Movie Spot In The USA!

So if District 9 did well, what happened to G.I. Joe?

District 9, produced by Peter Jackson and directed by Neill Blomkamp, a tale of aliens caught on planet Earth that are being moved from District 9 to District 10, in other words from one concentration camp to the other. This was a sleeper hit. The budget for this movie was 30 Million. District 9 made 37 Million over the weekend, pleasing studio execs and cementing Peter Jackson in the world of sci-fi movies. Keep em coming, Mr. Jackson.

With good word of mouth buzz at this years comic con and a quiet marketing campaign, "District 9" beat out last week's number 1 movie "G.I. Joe" by about $15 million. To date "G.I. Joe" has made 164 million. Which is more money than I would have thought "G.I. Joe" could have generated.

I have heard that there will be a prequel to "District 9," possibly explaining how the aliens got to Earth in the first place. However, I am much more interested in the sequel. "District 10" should play out to be a kick ass movie featuring our two aliens that escaped coming back to earth in three years and hopefully kicking hell out of the MNU.
