Sleeper Hit of the Summer District 9 Takes The Number 1 Movie Spot In The USA!

So if District 9 did well, what happened to G.I. Joe?

District 9, produced by Peter Jackson and directed by Neill Blomkamp, a tale of aliens caught on planet Earth that are being moved from District 9 to District 10, in other words from one concentration camp to the other. This was a sleeper hit. The budget for this movie was 30 Million. District 9 made 37 Million over the weekend, pleasing studio execs and cementing Peter Jackson in the world of sci-fi movies. Keep em coming, Mr. Jackson.

With good word of mouth buzz at this years comic con and a quiet marketing campaign, "District 9" beat out last week's number 1 movie "G.I. Joe" by about $15 million. To date "G.I. Joe" has made 164 million. Which is more money than I would have thought "G.I. Joe" could have generated.

I have heard that there will be a prequel to "District 9," possibly explaining how the aliens got to Earth in the first place. However, I am much more interested in the sequel. "District 10" should play out to be a kick ass movie featuring our two aliens that escaped coming back to earth in three years and hopefully kicking hell out of the MNU.

GIJOE is still raking in the money. Yo Joe!!!

Oh yeah, D9 was good too...and I'm surprised that it hasn't really been mentioned that it is mainly a movie with an agenda to raise awareness of South African apartheid. The director cleverly takes a real world issue and adds an alien twist to generate interest from the public about a topic that is very meaningful to him personally.

Wow, it's annoying that Peter Jackson is getting every bit of credit and Neill Blomkamp is getting ignored. Yeah, amazing movie though.

Yeah! District 9 was awesome, those who say that it was boring in the beginning just don't understand character development, not very many movies now a days have it.

And @Jman not to be the grammer police but it should be,
"So if District 9 did WELL, what happened to G.I. Joe?" Well instead of good. :)

District 9 I heard only had like a 30 million budget, and of course there is going to be a sequel District 10, Chris said he would come back in three years for Wickus.

gijoe is not making money. it made 22 mil this weekend. it is slated to make about 150 mil total. with a budget of 175 mil and advertising of 150 mil there is no way it will make a profit. and with all the 7 year olds going back to school next week it will only plumet from there. but i guesse its all about perspective. district 9 will make about the same amount when its done and cost only 30 mil with no known actors.
flames809
flames809 - 8/17/2009, 11:49 AM
well g.i.joe is still making money so it will probably pass it budget since it got 150 million in total like superdog said

della- well i seen the 80 cartoon and wayans was good in that movie he made that movie funny in a good way not a stupied way like da scary movies and do any movie are like da comicbook or da cartoon answer dat question cause da only movie that was like da comicbook was watchmen and wat happens if d9 fails?
superdog
superdog - 8/17/2009, 12:46 PM
flames@ the budget is 175 the advertising was 150. that is 325. it will only make 150 in its ENTIRE american run. total worldwide it will make around 250-300 mil. that is not a profit. maybe after dvd sales as cincyboy says it may break even, but will not make a significant profit if at all. i have no idea why they are planning a sequel. but terminator salvation made less and they are making a sequel to that so maybe hollywood judges profits differently or they simply dont care about them. who knows. im glad you liked it and im sure you will enjoy the sequel. :)

I saw Inglorious Basterds last night. I would recommend it..although it really should have been better. Quentin does indulge himself something rotten!

I thought District 9 sucked. It looked good and was directed well but it was boring as sin. There are no likeable characters to root for, and what the liquid does to people is just stupid.

I know pooch but this movie just could have done without it. Its different when its Kill Bill or Death Proof which you know is just an exploitation type movie anyway, but this was a serious story with great performances and just as your on the edge of your seat BOOM in pops Samual L [frick]ing Jackson with a voicover! And don't get me started on the end which obviously i cant ruin. Still a very good movie though.
