BOX OFFICE: STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS Beams Up $22 Million On First Friday Of Release
While it's performing a little better than 2009's Star Trek, Star Trek Into Darkness took less than expected at the North American box office yesterday. Iron Man 3 meanwhile managed to blast its way back to second place! Read on for details.
Star Trek Into Darkness opened for late evening and midnight screenings on Wednesday and after netting a combined total of $3.5 million for those, it went on to take $11.4 million on Thursday (its first full day of release). Yesterday however, the J.J. Abrams helmed sequel beamed up an additional $22 million, quite a bit lower than the predicted $25 - 27 million. Its current domestic cume now stands at $35.5 million, so whether or not it will manage to reach $100 million by tomorrow evening really does now depend on how well it fares today. 2009's Star Trek had a three day opening of $79 million, whereas this follow-up is expected to take only between $80 - 89 million for the same period. Oh, and for those of you looking for yet another Iron Man 3 update, the Marvel Studios threequel managed to hold off competition from The Great Gatsby to nab second place with $9.9 million. In the UK, Fast & Furious 6 opened with $4.6 million, the second highest opening of the year behind - you guessed it - Iron Man 3.
When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.
