BOX OFFICE: STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS Beams Up $22 Million On First Friday Of Release

While it's performing a little better than 2009's Star Trek, Star Trek Into Darkness took less than expected at the North American box office yesterday. Iron Man 3 meanwhile managed to blast its way back to second place! Read on for details.

Star Trek Into Darkness opened for late evening and midnight screenings on Wednesday and after netting a combined total of $3.5 million for those, it went on to take $11.4 million on Thursday (its first full day of release). Yesterday however, the J.J. Abrams helmed sequel beamed up an additional $22 million, quite a bit lower than the predicted $25 - 27 million. Its current domestic cume now stands at $35.5 million, so whether or not it will manage to reach $100 million by tomorrow evening really does now depend on how well it fares today. 2009's Star Trek had a three day opening of $79 million, whereas this follow-up is expected to take only between $80 - 89 million for the same period. Oh, and for those of you looking for yet another Iron Man 3 update, the Marvel Studios threequel managed to hold off competition from The Great Gatsby to nab second place with $9.9 million. In the UK, Fast & Furious 6 opened with $4.6 million, the second highest opening of the year behind - you guessed it - Iron Man 3.

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

@IM53 A good part of my summer will be spent at the movies. Especially in July.

@JR call me a kid all you want, but if all you do is send me a one word reply, because you don't like my opinion, you might need to question your own maturity. Yes we know IM3 is riding the Avengers BUT 77 on RT, a 7.8 on IMDB, and an A Cinemascore is not something that The Matrix Reloaded received. Into darkness was good, sad to see it not meet expectations.

IM3 owning the haters. OK I'll give you that I respect the reason some of you hate it but the general audiences and even some hardcore fans like me have embraced it. They just keep coming back and is off to another good weekend despite losing the I-Max screens to Star Trek

IM3 had an A cinema score like it was pointed out above. That's the people speaking folk.

Star Trek was great too. Saw it Thursday and Firday night. Blew past my expectations and JJ outdid himself. Huge step up over his first ST

Wow... Another somewhat disappointing day's gross for Star Trek. It seriously did not build at all on the success of the first one. Did they wait too long for the sequel?

What's funny to me is that these Abrams' Star Treks are exactly like "Iron Man 3" to Trekkies.... There's about 20-30% of them that can't handle the changes they make to the source material and scream about how horrible the films are, while the rest of the fandom and the general audiences give them "A" grades.

Of course, the Trek films actually *are* written by the guys who write the Transformers movies... So maybe their crying fans have a better point.

I really want Star Trek to succeed cause this guy is gonna direct my favorite series Star Wars. But with The Hangover and Fast 6 it has no chance past this week. And I am not a marvel asshole troll like Trudy, I am simply a Marvelite who likes it when my favorite movies succeed.

Much better than IM3 but not saying much...Abrahms has destroyed an iconic Sci fi character by pussyfying James T Kirk

@DoubleD I'm sorry but Epic will bomb HARD. It definitely will not gross more Than Fast 6 or even the Hangover. Happy birthday IM53 Keep Gusto away from your Grandmother at the party. He's too old for her.

"Hard core Star Trek fans have grown old an died of old age."

Your comment doesn't deserve a response, but here it goes. This has to be the dumbest thing I've heard today. The entire Stark Trek franchise is not even 50 years old. There have been countless spin-off shows and movies in the last several decades. So what if the old fans do die? There will always be new fans who will discover Star Trek. On top of that, TNG came out in the 80's. People who watched that show as kids are probably in their 20's or 30's now.

I think Abrahms has decided Star Wars VII is just going to be a remake of New Hope with a time shift and all the characters are going to be whining bitches...its just easier for him to just use the same story...oh yeah lots of lens flairs because thats innovative..assssss

DoubleD a very valid point, BUT the budget on this movie was ridiculous, with all the competition it might not gross enough, but I know that my younger siblings want to see it.

I don't know why ST doesn't get more love. I do understand that their film history isn't full of megahits but JJ has made the universe more action packed

The movie was great but neither night, Thu and Fri, was the theater packed. Good crowd but definitely not IM3 crowd.
