Harlan Ellison Wants J.J. Abrams To Hire Him For Star Trek 2

Harlan Ellison, the man who wrote one of the most beloved Star Trek episodes of all time, has let it be known he's eager to work with Trek rebooter J.J. Abrams on the upcoming sequel film.

Writing on his web bulletin board, Ellison was effusive in his praise of Abrams (not so much Trek creator Gene Roddenberry) and made plain his availability to provide services:

"Yes, I would likely try to steer him toward the original film idea I was asked to pitch, by the late Gene Roddenberry and a production exec whose name I have blissfully flensed from memory (but he had been, if I recall, a hairdresser or clothing designer or ex-boyfriend of someone or other, and he kept trying to press me to include the Mayan Calendar). ...
"If the very smart Abrams didn't want to go that way, I would be wide open to rethinking such a film from the git-go."

Ellison, of course, wrote the original series episode "City on the Edge of Forever," which featured the time-travel portal the Guardian of Forever, once rumored to be part of Abrams' first Trek movie (it wasn't).

Thanks to Scifiwire for the info.

Do you think Abrams should hire Harlan to come up with Star Trek 2??

Yeah, I agree no more time travel. However this guy wrote one of the best episodes ever, it'd be interesting to see what he would do with the new time line characters.

yeah, and he had a wicked proposal for a star trek movie back in the day that was shut down.

And even though the episode was great, I've read his script with the elements gene deleted and it was way better. He wanted to make a commentary on drug use but gene wouldn't have it. You can find his original script fairly easy, and it's a great read underhill.

I don't think we'll see him making any contribution to the next movie, but it'd be cool if he did.

He was very involved in Babylon 5, so I personlly would love to see what he could come up with now.

Please no Kahn! Lets keep up the ORIGINALITY of the previous movie. I for one don't want to spend my money on a story I've already seen.

@ flames

this guy doesn't want a cameo, he wants to come on as a writer. two totally different things. and that "pointy eared guy" was leonard nimoy. lol

please no Khan and no time travel. just move forward from what the started in the last one. with time altered, they could literally do ANYTHING. they could even have kirk's crew discover the borg, even though the borg were normally discovered by picard's crew...on accident, and kirk's crew never ran into them. but come on, they can do ANYTHING now. don't just rehash old stories.

i would much rather have this movie be about the discovery of the Borg. or about klingons. or ANYTHING, but not kahn.

yeah, no kahn. I don't see how you can have him in the movie with out rehashing the original. I want a new story, not a remake.

Q made Picards crew find the borg in a ep. then the borg made it a set goal to find them.

And Kirk and spock in the old movies found V.E.G.E.R i think it was that had been messed with by the borg?

so they could find them in this timeline that would be cool.

@ cris

yeah, thats why i said picard's crew found the borg on accident. Q teleported them out to the furthest reaches of the universe. an area where the federation had never even hear of yet. thats where they ran into the borg for the first time.

i didn't know about kirk and spock finding that Veger thing your talking about. what movie was that in, and did they actually mention the borg?? i can't imagine so, i don't think the borg were invented as villains yet.

anyway, my point is, time has been altered, so kirk's crew could find the borg somehow now, if they wanted. but i could understand if they wanted to not use them in these movies, as they're really TNG villains.

At the heart of the massive ship, V'ger is revealed to be Voyager 6, a 20th-century Earth space probe believed lost. The damaged probe was found by an alien race of living machines that interpreted its programming as instructions to learn all that can be learned, and return that information to its creator. The machines upgraded the probe to fulfill its mission, and on its journey the probe gathered so much knowledge that it achieved consciousness. Spock realizes that V'ger lacks the ability to give itself a focus other than its original mission; having learned what it could on its journey home, it finds its existence empty and without purpose. Before transmitting all its information, V'ger insists that the Creator come in person to finish the sequence. Realizing that the machine wants to merge with its creator, Decker offers himself to V'ger; he merges with the Ilia probe and V'ger, creating a new form of life that disappears into another dimension. With Earth saved, Kirk directs the Enterprise out to space for future missions.

granted it doesn't say Borg it is a alien race of living machines. so it kinda is borg but they didn't have a name yet im guessing.
