When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. Jesus Christ, Carol Marcus was NOT a Star Fleet officer, she was a scientist who's work was part funded by Star Fleet.

These stupid reboots turns everything into an action hero crap!

Alternate timeline. Anything goes. With the destruction of the Kelvin and then later Vulcan, people's lives (including the allocation of jobs) would be immeasurably changed.

@Ceejay She was when she was younger, according to one source anyway. I don't know how deep down the rabbit hole one would want to go with canon and non-canon sources. It gets pretty murky.
