Following the recent news that Quentin Tarantino (Kill Bill, The Hateful Eight, Inglorious Basterds) was in talks to helm a Star Trek movie for Paramount Pictures Deadline has shared an intriguing update to their original story.

According to their sources, the movie is now officially a go, and The Revenant writer Mark L. Smith has emerged as frontrunner to pen the script. Plus, we should all prepare to boldy go on our first R-rated journey to the final frontier!

QT reportedly pitched Paramount and J.J. Abrams on the idea and they're on board - although why the rating is necessary for a Star Trek flick is anyone's guess.

What do you guys think of this news? Sound off in the usual place.

I don’t see how we need an “R” rated Trek, but at the same time I can’t imagine that there are too many kids who will be heartbroken to be left out of seeing it, sadly.

That's bizarre. Not a major fan of QT, but said I would be open minded and see where it goes if this is legit. Love the new reboot a lot, but going R for Star Trek seems...unnecessary? Guess it is a wait and see until 100% confirmation.

Also two things:

1. Says original story, but does that mean just plot wise and still include Chris Pine and the rest of the original cast? Or a whole new cast?

2. Didn't QT say he was doing just one more movie before he retires? I thought he had something in the works original with it written and ready...so this takes its place, or his retirement was kind of BS?

@Menks123 - He has two movies left before retired so this Star Trek can be his last one

@Menks123 - I realize now that is probably what you meant. As a life long trek fan who was not a fan of the new trilogy, I know I am way over sensitive about it. Intellectually I know that Shatner and the original cast shouldn’t and can’t do another movie, but emotionally, I can’t imagine anyone else in those roles. Except Karl Urban. He really nailed the character.

@cswendse - Ahh gotcha and totally understand. I was not a big fan of the original series or movies, but the new trilogy got me hooked.
