And when asked to comment on the report, JJ Abrams responded with two very direct words: "Not true."

RUMOR DEBUNKED!

El Mayimbe here! So, I’m tracking a Latin bad guy role in an upcoming studio movie and although there is no progress today on that specific part, instead I got dibs on a big time bad guy role played by a Latin dude.

For starters, I’m not a trekkie whatsoever so I wasn’t even looking for a Star Trek scoop. Although heavily debated online as to who Benicio del Toro might be playing in Star Trek 2.

I’m here to tell you guys that according to my sources...

Benicio Del Toro is playing none other than...KHAN NOONIEN SINGH

or better known as...KHAN!!!

Early last month Variety reported that JJ Abram's had offered the main villain role to Benicio Del Toro. Based on what the sources for Latino Review have said it looks like he has accepted and will be playing the most popular Star Trek Villain ever, Khan.

Benicio, who starred in such films as Sin City, Traffic, and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas will be taking over a role made famous by Ricardo Montalbán. A role that Ricardo played in the original television series, and then portrayed in the classic, Star Trek 2: Wrath of Khan. Which to most Star Trek fans is the best film in the franchise, and a large part of its success is based on Ricardo's amazing performance and how well the character Khan was written. Finally Kirk had a worthy adversary. One that enjoys quoting Shakespeare and Herman Melville.

Who is Khan?
Khan Noonien Singh, commonly shortened to Khan, is a villain in the fictional Star Trek universe. According to backstory given in the character's first appearance, the Star Trek: The Original Series episode "Space Seed" (1967), Khan is a genetically engineered superhuman tyrant who once controlled more than a quarter of the Earth during the Eugenics Wars of the 1990s. After being revived in 2267 by the crew of the Enterprise, Khan attempts to capture the starship, but is thwarted by James T. Kirk and exiled on Ceti Alpha V to create a new civilization with his people. The character returns in the 1982 film Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, set fifteen years after "Space Seed", in which Khan escapes his imprisonment and sets out to seek revenge upon Kirk. The character was portrayed by Ricardo Montalbán in both the television episode and in the film. - wikipedia

I don't know if you read their stuff more than I do, Ror, but to me I find them terribly off point. I still think Abrams will stick to his guns and not include KHan, though Del Toro would make a great one.

Bleed, in the time I have wrote for CBM they have broke more scoops..that have come true..than any other site online bar the trades.

Maybe I just had a bad few times with them (they honestly aren't a sit I view often), I only have seen them break scoops that were the same as the guesses or facts every one had already put together, or just plain wrong. But if they do break scoops, I appreciate the fact they are not stuck up assholes like the folks Deadline :P

I want them to create an original villain like Nero from the last film. He was truly badass. Eric Bana was awesome as Nero.

Why rehash Khan?

[frick]ing lame as [frick]. First Zod gets rehashed for Superman and now Khan gets rehashed for Star Trek?

[frick] you Abrams

Kahn doesn't bother me, just the casting choice. I can't stand Del Toro's squint face. It drives me bonkers lol. I want somebody to hold his eyes open during his scenes. He had 2 good film roles, a small one in Snatch, and the other being in The Hunted with Tommy Lee Jones. Those are it. I don't think he can act cause he has no emotion, Keanu Reeves has a better range of emotions than him lol.

I really doubt this is in any way true. Khan was extremely articulate, where Benicio del Toro.... I just can't imagine. Then of course is the question as for WHY Khan is needed again? Would Spock be killed off again too? Would Project Genesis be hijacked once more? Would Genesis be an attempt to recreate Vulcan?

Doesn't matter really. This is bull and it's so obvious. Khan was a one-shot character from the series who was explored once more because Ricardo Monaltbán was such a freaking talented actor. Khan's agenda is to take revenge, even though he has a ship (as one of his crew declares) and the means to escape exile... he goes after Kirk. The two couldn't have met in the reboot series. Here he would just be a terrorist, maybe a colonist left for dead. Something out of Mass Effect.

No, Benicio del Toro is more than likely a Klingon.

Nah, a Klingon sounds better to me (my first guess was that he would be a Klingon indeed)...and as I've said, if it's Klingon then they wouldn't need to spend much money on hiss make-ups. :)

I freaked out when I found out that Heath Ledger was cast as the Joker and that turned out to be one of the best casting choices in CBM history.
From that point on I stopped questioning casting choices.
If it is true that he is playing Khan, I trust J.J. Abrams and Benicio Del Toro to do the character justice.

Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.
Del Toro MUST be a Klingon then.

There were references to Klingons in the first installment (and even that deleted scene with them), so I can see them appearing in a sequel.
