SlashFilm had this interesting behind the scenes documentary on the making of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. It's amazing to me how they went about making an epic space movie way back in the 70's that still stands up today.

This movie is over 30 years old and has none of today's computerized special effects and it's still visually stunning to see.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture was released in 1979. It was directed by Robert Wise and starred....

William Shatner as Admiral James T. Kirk

Leonard Nimoy as Mr. Spock

DeForest Kelley as Dr. Leonard 'Bones' McCoy

James Doohan as Cmdr. Montgomery 'Scotty' Scott

George Takei as Lt. Cmdr. Hikaru Sulu

Walter Koenig as Lt. Pavel Chekov

Nichelle Nichols as Lt. Cmdr. Uhura..... all the original crew from the series.

Take a look and let me know what you think.

Thanks tea. I thought this was really cool when I found it. I remember seeing this movie for the first time as a kid and it hit me just like Star Wars did.

Thanks LEEE.

tea : Yeah they are two completely different animals. I loved them both as a kid. Still do actually but not the new Star Wars movies or the Next Generation Trek crap.

tea : Right on. In the original Star Trek and Star Wars the science fiction space aspect was fine but it was the camaraderie between the characters that made the shows classic.

The new Star Wars and Next Generation Star Trek were too by the book, orderly and formal. To me they lost the personal touch that made the first ones great.

Thats just awesome and why I love the classics. No f-ing computer graphics. When they replaced actual filming models with cgi, sci-fi died! Great find.

Wrath of Khan was arguably the best...ever...Star Trek...whatever; be it movie or television.

I felt for the exotic woman losing her hair around 6 1/2 minutes. If it were me, I'd be stoked that I'd be collecting a hefty paycheck. But for women, its different.

"CGI killed sci-fi."

No way!!! Its the abuse of it that has caused its disreputation. Lucas is the biggest violator, hands down. But CGI, in and of itself? Uh Uh.

CGI enhances, but shouldn't be a primary substitute. Agreed. I like miniatures. But CGI as an addition can provide so much.
Some times less is more in this genre. Whollyweird sometimes forgets that rule.
