Gareth Edwards' STAR WARS Spinoff Gets FOXCATCHER Cinematographer

Gareth Edwards' STAR WARS Spinoff Gets FOXCATCHER Cinematographer

Though we still don't know which character it'll focus on, it's been revealed that Godzilla director Gareth Edwards' standalone Star Wars flick will be lensed by Greig Fraser (Foxcatcher, Killing Them Softly, Snow White and the Huntsman).

We know that the first Star Wars movie to follow J.J. Abrams' "Episode VII" will be a standalone film directed by Gareth Edwards for a 2016 release, but beyond that we haven't had any new details for quite a while. Well now we at least know who'll be manning the camera, as cinematographer Greig Fraser revealed that he's on board during an interview with Hitfix.

“I’m doing a [frick]ing Star Wars movie, which is like – I don’t know about you but Star Wars is like my first film love, do you know what I mean?… Gareth is doing a standalone film. Of course I do know some specifics, but it’s obviously something I’ve signed my kidneys away for.”

This is great news as Fraser has an impressive body of work, having lensed the likes of not only Foxcatcher, Zero Dark Thirty, Killing Them Softly and Let Me In, but also Snow White and the Huntsman which at the very least looked lovely. He also worked with Rupert Wyatt on his remake of The Gambler. Shame he couldn't spill any details, but perhaps another interviewer might be able to worm a few things outta him at some point. Who do you think the first standalone Star Wars movie will focus on?

Hope this'll be a creative take on a Star Wars movie outside the saga. Spinoffs are the chance to make a movie in the Star Wars universe without being bound the norms of the saga films. As long at the saga films stay true to the ideas of filming in 4-6, I'll be pleased.

Still think he's doing a boba fett film or today origin. This is great news. Killing them softly had great cinematography and foxcatcher looks beautiful

Boba fett is a mystery. He's bad as off of a few scenes. A solo film could really establish his badassness haha. Turn it into a sci go western type film

Cool! Good director. I really hope the solo movies are of other characters not shown in the movies. The Universe is pretty big.

Fett was great until they ruined him with the cartoons. Same with Maul.

I'd actually like to see the something different. Maybe "Rebels" esq (but not Rebels) without the cameos.

Thanks, but now I wish I wouldn't have asked for the writer. What a terrible choice.

@davinci - I completely agree. That has disaster written all over it. How on earth that guy got picked to write a star wars movie is beyond me.

I hope this is obi-wan or yoda related. Ewan McGregor deserves another crack at Star Wars because he is so underrated and his Obi-wan was fantastic. I'd love to see his character expanded on after the events of Ep. III.

Boba fett is a horrible idea for a movie because he is (or was before the prequels) mysterious. Why can't people grasp the notion that what makes mysterious characters so cool is the fact that they are [frick]ing mysterious? The moment you give away too much information or backstory, they aren't as cool anymore.

How ironic (more like depressing) is it that the original trilogies two most mysterious characters, Darth Vader and Boba Fett, both appeared as kids in the prequels. What the [frick] was George Lucas thinking??

My guess is he's doing the movie for Fett. He gives me a "good hunter story" vibe. Let us pray.

This film will be gorgeous and the main character will be the most boring character in the whole film. Calling it now.

Can't compute the fact that two Star Wars films are being made at the same time.

Too say I love it is an understatement.
