George Lucas On Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher & Harrison Ford's Return To STAR WARS

The man behind (arguably) the most popular film franchise in history has commented on the much discussed return of the lead actors from the original Star Wars trilogy, for Episode VII and beyond. According to him, they have "pretty much" already been signed..

I think at this point we know it's a given that the new Star Wars movies do at least feature the characters of Luke, Leia and Han, we just need official confirmation that the actors that portrayed them in the original trilogy will be returning. We had heard Harrison Ford had already signed but again, nothing official. Mark Hamill says he hasn't signed yet but is in negotiations, and we thought Carrie Fisher had confirmed she'd play Leia again but she was apparently only "joking". Well now we have comments from George Lucas himself on the whole hullabaloo, and he reckons despite everything we've heard previously, Disney/Lucasfilm were already in final negotiations with the trio. “We had already signed Mark and Carrie and Harrison—or we were pretty much in final stages of negotiation," reveals Lucas. "So I called them to say, ‘Look, this is what’s going on.’ Maybe I’m not supposed to say that. I think they want to announce that with some big whoop-de-do, but we were negotiating with them.”

Sounds like all of this has indeed been building up to a "whoop-de-do" announcement, so as if to cover himself to allow for the loudest fanfare possible, Lucas adds: “I won’t say whether the negotiations were successful or not.” Lucas also elaborates on what he'll actually be doing in his consulting role on the new movies. “I mostly say, ‘You can’t do this. You can do that,’ ” he explains. “You know, ‘The cars don’t have wheels. They fly with antigravity.’ There’s a million little pieces. Or I can say, ‘He doesn’t have the power to do that, or he has to do this.’ I know all that stuff.” Be sure to head on over to Bloomberg Business Week for the full report, as there's lots more interesting stuff on Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm.

I've got mixed feelings. I love the original cast, but I don't know if they've all aged into what we would want from older versions of the characters. It's almost like bringing back Edward Furlong to star as an adult John Connor.

Obviously there are problems with the comparison given the legendary status of the Star Wars cast, but I think you get the point.

Of course they are all coming back. As soon as Fisher's spokesperson did the retraction I figured this was a marketing decision. Disney wants to make sure this baby is a big hit and pushing the old crew will help connect the movie to past glory. When Disney finally officially releases this it will be non stop ham. I doubt Ford, Hamil or Fisher will have big roles in the new film, but Disney will make you think they will.

No one is "signed" yet. Everyone -- the suits, the creative team, the stars -- wants Luke, Leia and Han to be in the upcoming sequels, but the negotiations are still in process. Once they are, there will be an official announcement through Lucasfilm/Disney.

We all know they're just gonna be supporting characters. I have no problems with this. Let me know when they start casting the main characters though.

I'm betting all three are asking for big big money. Trying to get that one last payday. Disney is probably low balling them hard saying they will be in supporting roles. It will all be worked out in time but thats what this is about. They want a big piece of the pie and mickeys like [frick] you old scrubs you get what i give you.

Also, they keep talking about the big three but whats up with the true pimp lando. Politician, war hero, snake in the grass, colt 45 selling, big billy D needs to be in this.

Its been 4 months since SW7 was announced and for 4 months we keep getting this "Theyre so old now" crap.

If these actors play parts that are written well and are not written like theyre still 25, then whats the problem?

Whats pretty sad is I hear these fat nerds at a comic shop making comments about Hamill, Ford and Fisher being old and some of these nerds are under 25 but are 300-400 lbs and are probably unable to beat off even. They are in their "prime" and look like that and laugh about an actor being old.

Maybe a fat geek thinks they dont look so bad if they point out someone else is actually old.

If you arent happy with your looks-deal with it and stop trying to put others down to feel better.

Hamill, Ford and Fisher are past their prime. But their Prime was a billion times better than the people mocking them and they are likely in better shape than 99% of the nerds who keep ranting about their age.

Would you want Hamill, Ford or Fisher to come to your house and see you still living with Mom and so fat you went impotent at 19 and laugh their ass off???

They were in film in the early 20's and youre at Mom's dealing with erectile dysfunction.

So who should be laughing at who???

@nach1wan, Yes, there is a difference. However, there's a similar issue of not being able to predict how the actors would age. Mark Hamill played Luke as a young man. For the sake of the movie, ideally he would have aged into an Alec Guinness-esque older man. However he doesn't really fit that type, the same way Furlong doesn't fit the heroic John Connor type.

Yeah I'm sure that's a vital role and not just 'we have to humor this guy, make him feel useful'.

@nach1wan, Yeah, Harrison Ford could definitely be an old Han. It's Hamill that concerns me the most since old Luke would probably be the most important to the story.

I still got mixed feelings. IMO Luke, Leia and Han should be recast. Younger cast for a new trilogy. That's just my two cents

I can't wait until the gang rushes into the Falcon and it doesn't off, so Chewbacca smacks Han who wakes up....much like Han used to give it a good smack when something was wrong. By the way a friend of mine that works for Disney told me the titles for the new trilogy.

I'm a bit worried about the OT cast returning because I can see a number of things possibly happen:
1. Disney/Lucasfilm shoves these old actors in our faces the whole film for nostalgia/fan service sake
2. Fans ideas of what it will be like to see the OT cast returning wont fit the reality *I'm not expecting fantastic performances/major action scenes from any of them*
3. My image of them might be destroyed
Panoramacon
Panoramacon - 3/7/2013, 11:23 PM
This makes me less interested in seeing these movies. The story is closed and 7, 8, and 9 were collapsed into ROTJ. Does anyone really feel that there is anything left to tell? Anakin's story is done, the Rebellion won and the galaxy celebrates! What's left to tell? Zero interest in Luke Skywalker as an old man. Would be more hopeful if these movies were a true new beginning, new villains, new heroes, a new war and nothing tied to what we know already. No skywalker/solo children, no continuance of the Empire, blah blah. It's a shame and a lost opportunity to do something truly fresh and amazing for a new generation. Remember there was a time when you didn't know anything about Star Wars and you let the movies speak for themselves when you saw them for the first time. Think about how amazing that was, how fresh and alive when anything was possible. You can't have that when you are too busy thinking how whats playing on screen will tie into what I already know and hopefully won't alter it for the worse-- "hey, there's old man Solo, yippee!"

I think that it is the best move ever to bring back the original actors with there distinct voices as well...

If Lucas brought Jar Jar to life surely they can tweak a little CGI on the real actors in post production if need be...

This decision makes me want to see it now...
