ROGUE ONE Director Gareth Edwards Reveals Why He Took A Break From Hollywood After Helming STAR WARS Movie

Rogue One director Gareth Edwards pretty much disappeared from Hollywood after making Lucasfilm's first Star Wars spin-off, and The Creator helmer has now explained his absence. Read on for details...

Filmmaker Gareth Edwards put himself on the map with Monsters and, after taking charge of Legendary's Godzilla reboot, he was later tasked with helming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story for Lucasfilm.

The movie was a critical and commercial hit, though it's since been reported that Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy was brought in to helm extensive reshoots designed to reshape the final act. We haven't seen anything from Edwards since, though he's finally returning with an original sci-fi project in this month's The Creator

While speculation has run rampant about why Edwards chose to walk away from Hollywood for such a lengthy period, it sounds like the director simply felt he needed time to take a breather and reassess his future plans

"I needed to get off the merry-go-round, do you know what I mean?" he says in an interview with SFX (via SFFGazette.com). "In Hollywood, you can get stuck on the hamster wheel, or whatever analogy you want to use. I just wanted to get off and have a break to take some time thinking about the next thing."

"I got to make a very low-budget science fiction film with Monsters, and I realized there were some serious advantages to having no money. It was kind of a shock to have all the money you could ever want, and still be limited," he said of making Rogue One. "I felt like if I could somehow get that big bag of cash and send it back in time to me when I was making Monsters, the possibilities would have been infinite."

"And so, in a weird way, I was trying to find that kind of scenario again. I was as much interested in the process of how to make the film as I was the idea."

So, no, Edwards didn't end up in a director's jail for whatever may or may not have happened while making Rogue One. It appears he's no longer interested in working on well-known IPs and has instead set out to find himself again in an effort to recapture the magic he found with his earlier, original projects.

Are you excited to check out The Creator?

Amidst a future war between the human race and the forces of artificial intelligence, Joshua, a hardened ex-special forces agent grieving the disappearance of his wife, is recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator, the elusive architect of advanced AI who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end the war...and mankind itself.

Joshua and his team of elite operatives journey across enemy lines, into the dark heart of AI-occupied territory, only to discover the world-ending weapon he’s been instructed to destroy is an AI in the form of a young child.

The movie stars Washington (Tenet), Gemma Chan (Eternals), Ken Watanabe (Inception), Sturgill Simpson (Dog), newcomer Madeleine Yuna Voyles and Academy Award winner Allison Janney (I, Tonya).

Gareth Edwards and Chris Weitz penned The Creator's screenplay, from a story by Edwards. The filmmaker also produces alongside Kiri Hart, Jim Spencer, and Arnon Milchan. while the executive producers are Yariv Milchan, Michael Schaefer, Natalie Lehmann, Nick Meyer, and Zev Foreman.

The Creator is set to be released in theaters on September 29.

Say what you want, to me RO was a very mid film. I remember leaving the theater thinking "Ok, Vader was cool and all but... why?"

@Fogs - It wasn’t amazing but it is by far the best Disney Star Wars movie.

To me Gareth Edwards falls in a class of directors that seem to thrive when they do their own thing. Often hit or miss story wise, the direction is always good. I would put Directors like Danny Boyle and Ron Howard in that same category.

@Forthas - I think he's good, but no on that level. I would closer match him to Neill Blomkamp, in terms of their style and subject matter. I watched the trailer thinking it was his movie to be honest.

@Forthas

Ron Howard has made some shit movies. Garett Edwards was taken off Rogue One, too, so I’m not sure he can take credit for that when Tony Gilroy pretty much restructured it.

Personally I think he’s got an eye for visual storytelling but lacks in his script, emotional grounding. Hope he has a hit with The Creator for original storytelling sake but I have a bad feeling about it.

Mid-budget original filmmaking is going to enjoy a resurgence.

@Usernametaken - yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Especially with the mid-budget action movies since John Wick the way is definitely being paved for it

Would love to see Edward’s original cut of RO before overbearing Kathleen Kennedy brought in Gilroy for reshoots.

What we got in the end was meh but still one of the better SW projects.. which ain’t saying much.

Unfortunately he picked a dud as his leading man. That is going to hurt this movie.

@DocSpock - are you talking about John David Washington??
McMurdo
McMurdo - 9/12/2023, 2:31 PM
@TheLobster - yup. Dude cannot act and lives off his father's name alone. Has a single facial expression.
DocSpock
DocSpock - 9/12/2023, 4:40 PM
@TheLobster -

yes. He is a barely average actor. People give him points because of his Dad & call him "amazing" because he is black.

He does not have the presence or skills to successfully headline a big movie.

TheLobster
TheLobster - 9/12/2023, 5:29 PM
@McMurdo - I just don’t agree with that take at all. He was stellar in BlacKkKlansman and I enjoyed him in Tenet and even HBO’s Ballers.
TheLobster
TheLobster - 9/12/2023, 5:30 PM
@DocSpock - “and because he’s black” jfc you’re ignorant. I can understand if you think he’s not a leading man from his previous works (I disagree but whatever) but to say his praise is partially due to his race is dumb as hell.
DocSpock
DocSpock - 9/12/2023, 5:42 PM

not dumb at all. Many people on this site often do it. Blind virtue signaling.

@DocSpock - No one is blind virtue signaling - it’s called being racist my guy. Accept your true nature and maybe you’ll find some peace..

Or go watch more Newsmax/Fox News/Info Wars and rot your brain idc lol

The guy is not a very good actor, so you call me a racist for saying so. Pretty clear what that makes you.

Rogue One is the 3rd best Star Wars movie behind Empire and ROTJ.

Fight me.
MarvelZombie616
MarvelZombie616 - 9/12/2023, 1:21 PM
@BringFFtoMCU - I think Empire is the best and the first movie (Star Wars) is the 2nd best, but i would put Rogue One on the same level as Return of the Jedi, which was the first Star Wars movie that i saw in a theatre.
Unfortunately Empire eluded me somehow back when i was 5 years old, Superman II was the first movie i saw in a thetre.
McMurdo
McMurdo - 9/12/2023, 2:32 PM
@BringFFtoMCU - nah even with Ewoks ROTJ still beats it by a whole lot for the first and third act alone.
DocSpock
DocSpock - 9/12/2023, 4:37 PM
@BringFFtoMCU -

Rogue One is the only SW movie that can be mentioned with the original trilogy. It was excellent.

1) Empire
2) Star Wars
3) Rogue One
4) Return

Worthy of mention Revenge

The rest are all unrankable crap.
