Stargate Reboot Finds New Hope At Amazon With WandaVision Showrunner Jac Schaeffer

Amazon is making another attempt to bring Stargate to streaming, this time with WandaVision showrunner Jac Schaeffer. Could her take on the beloved sci-fi franchise finally deliver the reboot fans want?

Variety (via SFFGazette.com) is reporting that WandaVision and Agatha All Along showrunner Jac Schaeffer has been tapped by Amazon MGM Studios to develop a new Stargate TV series. This is part of her overall deal with Amazon, which was announced earlier this year.

According to the trade, a writers' room will open "in the near future," with Safehouse Pictures' Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell attached to executive produce the revamp. Of course, this isn't the first time Amazon has attempted to breathe new life into the long-running sci-fi franchise.

This past June, we learned that Martin Gero, who created NBC's Blindspot, had been dropped from an attempted revamp amid concerns his vision would only appeal to hardcore fans.

Whether Schaeffer's take fares any better remains to be seen, but she'll likely strive to reach a much broader audience as Amazon continues finding ways to bring the many franchises it acquired from MGM to streaming. Tomb Raider, Barbershop, Legally Blonde prequel Elle, Poltergeist, and Robocop are among those already here or currently in the works.

Schaeffer's contributions to the MCU garnered rave reviews and plenty of award success; WandaVision, for example, earned 23 Primetime Emmy Award nominations. Agatha All Along was another critical darling, and before her Marvel work, Schaeffer penned Olaf's Frozen Adventure and The Hustle.

Stargate's premise is brilliantly simple yet infinitely expandable, making it all the more surprising that this new take was abandoned. Still, like Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, it seems the streamer was uncertain about relying on longtime fans returning and the ability to attract new ones when there's so much history to catch up on.

The Stargate franchise began with the 1994 movie starring James Spader and Kurt Russell, before expanding into one of sci-fi television's most enduring properties. Stargate SG-1 followed, running for 10 seasons with Richard Dean Anderson, Michael Shanks, Amanda Tapping, and Christopher Judge leading the cast. The spinoff Stargate Atlantis then kept the franchise alive for another five seasons between 2004 and 2008.

In the series, ancient alien devices called "Stargates" create wormholes between planets, allowing near-instantaneous travel across the galaxy. When humans discover how to operate these mysterious portals, they form specialised military teams to explore thousands of worlds, encountering both wonders and dangers among the stars.

With Schaeffer now at the helm, can Stargate finally make its long-awaited return to the small screen? Given her track record of blending genre storytelling with character-driven drama, she could be an inspired choice to take the series in an exciting new direction.

the Wandavision showrunner...there is hope again! please bring back my beloved Stargate universe, there has to be a way of doing a Next Generation on Stargate, where you can revive the universe, while respecting the original fanbase but making it open to new fans

@dancingmonkey08 - Which is exactly what #GerosGate was going to do, but the smucks from Amazon who were fired from Netflix shut it down after taking over.

Hope it can be truly transporting, like the OG 1994 film. I couldn't get into the series, maybe wrote it off too quick, but the movie felt more authentic, no aliens or ancient Egyptians magically speaking English, great costumes and sets that didn't look like they were filmed in some Canadian forest, and of course the actors and that great score by David Arnold. TV series dumbed everything way down, as has often been the case when movies jump to the small screen, but these days, streaming shows can have pretty great quality, so I dunno. Tv series was very popular so I may not be able ta get more of what I liked about the movie

@Lem1 - I would like to the them dig into earths past history, before Sumerian culture, before the great flood. So much potential mythology to use. Even a bit of cryptozoology could be spread in, and world’s religions

I thought the original movie was just okay, so I never watched the shows. I’m considering giving them a shot.

Is it worth my valuable doing nothing time?

This will not succeed. Folks on other websites are already saying this series will be DOA. By not letting the original showrunners bring some members of the OG cast back and gear a new series towards the established fan base, Amazon has alienated them all.

As I was reading the headline I was 5% interested and then I read Jac Schaeffer and became 100% invested instantaneously.

Love Schaeffers work in the MCU, but this is not the sandpit they wanna jump into, If it aint #GerosGate no SG fan is gonna accept this, Amazon will burn their money, then shelf the product for 10 years and try again

This is one of those times where paying fan service to IP you specifically paid huge money for is actually the smarter business decision, for every "New" fan you'll loose 5 OG fans, thats before you take into account the sheer amount of review bombing it'll receive just for existing.

And this comes from a sane #SaveStargate fan from the OG all the way through SG:U Hell i even enjoyed the short lived SG:Infinty cartoon.
