Stephen King's DARK TOWER Series Moves To Sony

After almost a decade of development and bouncing around from one studio to the next, the dormant, live-action film/television adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower novel series has been reignited at Sony.

Director/producer Ron Howard has attempted to launch an ambitious adaptation of Stephen King's Dark Tower series for a LONG time.  After starting development at Universal in 2010, the project stalled and moved to Warner Bros. in 2012.  Three years later, The Dark Tower is now at Sony Pictures.  The producer team of Akiva Goldsman, Howard, Brian Grazer and Erica Huggins hope that this is the project's final home.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner have collaborated on a new script that completely overhauled previous development.

Said new Sony chairman Tom Rothman, "There are few projects out there that compare with the scope, vision, complex characters and fully drawn world that Stephen King has created with The Dark Tower. I am a giant fan. And, as Stephen himself does, we love the direction that Akiva and Jeff have taken. This is a great opportunity for a director to put his or her stamp on a cool global franchise."

This could be great, but Goldsman's name worries me.

I remembered Liam Neeson was up for a role for this movie

@Interestein, Goldsman's actually been on this project for almost 5 years now. He was going to be the co-showrunner of the TV portion back when it was still going to be movies and TV.

I am happy to hear this & truely hope it moves forward. Maybe for a 2017 release. That would be great.

@retrofit As a huge dark tower fan, I couldn't agree more. Do this game of thrones style, but on Netflix. This series could be huge.

Stephen King came up with the Roland character after seeing Clint Eastwood in a spaghetti western so using Scott Eastwood would be ideal. He looks exactly like Roland is described and has pretty good acting chops. This is the right time for the series. Let's make it happen Sony!

This is so amazing, if they can get my boy Timothy Olyphant to play The Gunslinger, we're set.

Also, since the comics rights are at Marvel, what if they buy it from sony? and then they make a movie/netflix series out of it? And what if they make a crossover with the marvel universe behind one of the doors? Ok maybe that not.

Yes please, also no javier bardem as was rumored, I cant stand to look at or listen to that guy, and his best role (no country for old men) was only good because he never tried to speak that awful broken English of his. Timothy Olyphant for Roland!

I've always felt pretty "meh" with the announcements for Roland over the years. Russell Crowe? Javier Bardem? Really?? Have these people even read the books?? Long, tall, and ugly. How about Guy Pearce? Or Daniel Day Lewis? Or Karl Urban (kind of young IMO but could pull it off)? Cast for the character, not just to have a 'big name star'.

I so want to see the world of Dark Tower coming to life, but as a TV show instead. It could be the next big thing, like Game of Thrones is on TV.

It's best not to tell SOME people that they have "forgotten the face of their father".

@TheDesertGorilla Yes, genetically perhaps. But not in acting chops, and he doesn't have that gaunt, hard look to him that Clint did. He's more of a pretty boy with less screen presence than a Hemsworth or Tatum, so....yeah. No thanks.

oh ....and yes, years and years ago I did read who King based the character on. I used to love his books in elementary school through early middle school, so I'm very familiar
