Two More PACIFIC RIM Posters Released; Legendary's Thomas Tull On Box Office Tracking

The latest promo posters for Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim feature awesome new looks at the Jaeger 'Striker Eureka' and the Kaiju monster 'Leatherback'. Plus, Legendary Pictures' Thomas Tull comments on the buzz surrounding the film's poor box office tracking.

Speaking with Shock Till You Drop, Legendary Pictures CEO Thomas Tull is asked about the buzz surrounding Pacific Rim's box office tracking. The Guillermo del Toro-helmed epic is said to be not doing such a great job in early tracking (despite the director saying that it's improving), with audiences reportedly being more interested in seeing Grown Ups 2 that weekend. A big surprise for one of this summer's most highly anticipated films. However, Tull still recommends seeing Pacific Rim, saying that those who have seen it love it. "Audiences that have seen the movie, love the movie. I think in our core audiences and, sort of, the fanboy groups that want to see the movie...we have seen tracking wildly on all of our movies so, at this point, all we can say to audiences is if you go see this movie, you're going to love it and you're going to tell your friends - that's all we can do. The other stuff, it has almost become like sporting events. Every weekend, it's so wildly reported on and now even opining about tracking, which is kind of weird to me. I can tell you, when I was a kid and Star Wars came out, I wasn't like, 'I don't know, the trailer looks cool, but the tracking sucks.' I don't know what that is." Additionally, the film's official Facebook page posted two more promo posters, featuring the Jaeger 'Striker Eureka' and the Kaiju 'Leatherback'.

Pacific Rim stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day and Ron Perlman. The film is set to hit theaters July 12th.

Avatar,Star Wars,WWZ,Mama all had bad tracking records! Let the audience decide! Besides WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND DOES NOT GO SEE A MOVIE BECAUSE THE TRACKING SUCKS??

Box office tracking originally was used to adjust marketing for groups you were not tracking today its used by marketing groups and by rival studios to try and bury movies before release. No way grown ups finishes higher than this at box office. No way.

Agreed, those tracking things are not that accurate most of the time because of their limited scope. I'm positive that PR will beat Grown Ups 2, but I don't know just how good it will do.

I think will be awesome but the movie will not take no more than 350-400 mln for me.

@Lordofthrones

You know, it's entirely possible for a movie to be extremely successful but not make a billion. I'm pretty sure the billion dollar club has fewer than 20 movies in it. It's pretty damn difficult to crack a billion worldwide. I highly doubt Pacific Rim will get a billion. I wouldn't be surprised if it underperforms domestically but does pretty well internationally to give it around half a billion worldwide total.

@LordoftheThrones26

I'm not trying to degrade anyone. But only 16 movies have ever passed 1 billion and only one of them was based off an original property.

And Pacific Rim is a weird concept that a general audience aren't necessarily interested in.

I'm not saying the movie will tank and I hope that it does make bucket-loads of money! But it's highly unlikely.

Adam Sandler is DONE all his new movie have sucked and bombed! Pacific Rim will make shitloads more money! Plus this could all be a scheme from a rival studio!

@LordoftheThrones26 A billion is a pipe dream, won't happen. And as others have said it doesn't have to make a billion to be considered extremely successful. Given its budget (around 200 Million) anything over $400-500 Million would be considered a financial success. And it's a GDT movie so you know it'll be a creative success.
