UPDATE: Is A New 3-D Star Wars Trilogy On The Horizon?

The good people at marketsaw.blogspot.com think so! Wait until you find out who is rumored to direct?

This from Marketsaw:

"Here is a strong rumor that should wet your appetites! (or sour them if you have had too much of the franchise). I have been hearing rumblings... extremely quiet at first, but now heating up significantly and from a trusted source - that George Lucas is preparing to unleash another STAR WARS trilogy upon us, this time in stereoscopic 3D. This is NOT the TV series, these are brand spankin' new 3D STAR WARS movies."

Music to my ears! If this becomes true then I really hope Lucas goes with a current story featuring Luke, Han, Leia, Chewey and the rest of the gang. I want to see the Grand Admiral Thrawn trilogy by Timothy Zahn. That would be epic to watch up on the big screen in 3-D.

More from Marketsaw:

"What an interesting competitive box office landscape that would make over the next 6 to 10 years! James Cameron's AVATAR world vs. George Lucas' STAR WARS world. I could see Lucas getting a little jealous over a successful launch of AVATAR - jealous because it is a fully articulated universe, like his. And if he doesn't act on it - his franchise may well be relegated to a back seat as potentially the records will start falling to Pandora. Heck STAR WARS is still not 3D yet and what better way to try to maintain a lock on bragging rights than to launch into three more in native stereoscopic 3D."

So it sounds like Lucas is waiting to see how well James Cameron's Avatar will do at the box office before he starts running with this new idea. That's fair, but why does Lucas give a damn. George knows that to rekindle the Star Wars universe back into good standing's with the franchise's long term fans he has to deliver something good. Not something so so, and the whole movie cannot be a special effect.

Anyone want to guess who is rumored to be directing? Only Steven Spielberg, and Francis Ford Coppola are rumored to be taking the director's chair with Lucas producing. I have said this many times before, stick with what your good at. Lucas is a writer and a producer NOT A DIRECTOR!!! I would love to see how a fresh Star Wars Trilogy would play out in the hands of Steven Spielberg. One word, Epic!

UPDATE: AICN sent an email asking the folks at Lucasfilms to confirm the new plans for a new 3-D Star Wars trilogy. Lucasfilm sent back a flat confirmation that they are not working on re releasing the original trilogy in a 3-D format or working on a new trilogy. This coming from the same people that denied that Ewan Mcgregor was in fact cast as Obi-Wan. I must have been out of my mind to think Lucas wanted to right a few of his wrongs out there in movie land. Instead it appears that he doesnt care what the fans want. Just what he wants, turning him into the Hollywood mogul/tyrant that he once hated and vowing to never become. At least there is hope. Star Trek and Avatar will keep reaching deeper in the pockets of George Lucas hopefully waking him up enough so that he can see the true nature of the force.

Hey Multi, did you see my Hall Of Villains tour article? Just wondering. I mentioned your name in the article. Let me know if those pics are entered into the Halloween contest?

Star Wars: Boy I hope Lucas only produces, the guy can not draw the emotion from his actors. Empire and Return were my two favorite Star Wars flicks with Revenge of the sith coming in third place. George did not direct Empire or Return,,,go figure.

I think this could be great.

P.S. - Saw the Avatar action figures at Target yesterday...what pieces of crap. Made me think of that Small Soldiers movie from a few years back when all the action figures come to life. Ugh.

good point Tea. There were so many problems with the most recent trilogy that Lucas probably feels that he needs to do something to re spark interest in Star Wars. With Star Trek and Avatar tearing up the box office George is probably saying "Hey, what about my 45 percent market share from the sci fi communtiy?" Umm well sir, the last trilogy had Binks in it as comic relief??? And you killed the best villain Star Wars has had in years in the first episode only to replace him with some old fart named count dooku? And the ships of the past look better then the ships of the future,, and,,,oh you get the point!!

I have been for saying for many years that they need to do a post Episode 6 series.

There is so much fertile ground for great story telling, it would be a shame not to. But Lucas just NEEDS to find someone else to write it.

Of course they can't possibly top the chemistry and charisma of the original principal cast. And it's also not very likely the CGI will measure up the the brilliantly shot quirky, beleiveable special effects used in the past. But it never hurts to try I guess.

I would like to see the old boy repair his legacy a little bit. But he will have to pop that bubble he lives in a bit and listen to some other perspectives besides his own.

I thought that they were gonna release the original trilogy in 3D, not some new picture.

It doesn't really matter though, because even if they do make a new STAR WARS film, and even if said film is totally AWESOME; jaded, pretentious, A-HOLE fanboys will STILL find fault with it.

If Lucas is worried about pleasing fans he should just forget it. NO MATTER WHAT he does with the STAR WARS films fanboys will whine and complain and say "what I would have done is this..." or "I would've cast this person..." or "My lame fanfic with multiple misspellings, grammar errors, and disjointed, incomprehensible plot is way better than this".

Give up George. You can't win.

This wont happen, he will release the original films in 3D.
Star Wars VII-IX has been rumoured for years but lets face it, the books and comics, and games have covered all that, and are mostly regarded as canonical.
Carrie Fisher et al have aged, and Mark Hamill has stated he wishes he wasnt so associated with Luke. Fair enough, theres all the areas the books havent covered, but for a new audience (unfamiliar with the books), it would be difficult to jump so many years in the future.
And he wont film any of the books, I dont see that happening.
Hell though, if someone wanted to do a CGI film of the Hand of Thrawn triology, Id be just as happy to see it.
Cant we just just leave Star Wars alone?

You want the story to be about currants? Or just current.

Without the original cast/characters I have no interest, and considering Harrison Ford didn't even want to be in Jedi and time has not been kind to Carrie Fisher, I'm not holding my breath. I could see Hamill as a master, but I'd want him kicking ass, not spouting zen philosphy.

ugh 3-D is such a gimmick .. which is perfect for Lucas since gimmicks are all he has left.

I wish they would go with a well acted serious tone. The prequels should have had the epic feel that Lord of the Rings had. I don't care for the 3-D format, I just want an epic three hour Star Wars movie. I'd love to see Knights of the Old Republic as a movie.

@Assassin666- That would be great. And I agree with what you said about the prequels. Ha, could not imagine a Jar-Jar Binks type character in LOTR!

it's not happening dammit. Lucas has said over and over that STAR WARS is all about the story of the Skywalkers. A 3-D redo of the trilogies is one thing, but he's not going to make a brand new trilogy just for shits.

end.

No 3-D. I'm getting tired of this crap. All Lucas keeps doing is messing up the original trilogy. First Greedo shoots first, and now this. Why does he keep changing whats perfect for a quick buck. Its no surprise that he directs movies like every ten years. He spends that time, trying to find cheap disgraceful ways to get more money. I'm still waiting on the day that i will see the original trilogy on TV, and not some special edition, fake cgi crap. Damn you Lucas, you've fallen into the traps of Hollywood greed.

@ Corndogburgler. Very true sir. I am aware of that. I am quite familiar with the mythos as continued by Timothy Zahn and others. Hopefully they will draw on that stuff.

Being a Sith Lord myself, naturally I long to see Luke dabble in the Dark Side LOL

3-D is stupid and unoriginal, its been done to death, after Avatar and Toy Story 3-D leave it ALONEEE! I would say the same about the star Wars franchise but the thought of episodes 7, 8 and 9 are kind of interesting. And if they do end up making those movies they better be like the originals none of thsi boring as hell trilogy, I dont care if the federation is in intergalactic debt I just want to see spaceships blow up goddamnit!!!! lol. Seriously though they needa good enough story to do it, maybe follow on the lineage, the son of Luke. It makes sense since (in the timeline of the movies) the first trilogy (really the 2ND trilogy) was followed Anakin Skywalker, the 2nd one (or 1ST one) was about his son Luke and so the 3rd one would naturally be about Luke's kids. Just an idea. :)
