Van Damn! Universal Rebooting TIMECOP

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Universal Pictures is developing a reboot to Jean-Claude Van Damme's tour de force, Timecop(1994). Sadly, the re-imagining will not feature the Muscles from Brussels. Hit the jump to voice your opinion.

I gotta admit, Timecop is one of my favorite guilty pleasures. Hell, Jean-Claude Van Damme's films from the early 90's are all guilty pleasure for me. Yes, I had no taste in films when I was hitting puberty, [frick] you. Anyways, the 1994 film is "set in the near future where time travel is regulated by a police force. One officer (Van Damme) runs afoul a crooked politician (played by Ron Silver) using time travel to further his political career."

It's incredibly entertaining, with a strong supporting cast lead by Mia Sara (Ferris Bueller's hot girlfriend) as Melissa Walker, Bruce McGill as Commander Eugene Matuzak and Gloria Reuben as Sarah Fielding.

So, when today's news came out that Universal was remaking Timecop I wasn't exactly happy, nor was I angry. I always thought the premise was interesting enough. If handled correctly a franchise could be cultivated.

Fun Fact: The film and its sequel (direct-to-DVD) were both written by Mike Richardson, the founder and publisher of Dark Horse Comics. His company published the adaptations which were themselves written by Mark Verheiden, and drawn by Ron Randall. - wikipedia

Hollywod is so running out of ideas that now they want to reboot B C and D Grade movies...

That's why I think Sucker Punch was a Great movie and it was an Original idea...

It beats any reboot because it was original...

Sorry AussyAce, just because a film is original does not mean that it is good. Suckerpunch had some great visuals, but the story sucked. And I really like all of Zack Snyder's other films.

As for TimeCop reboot -- It was probably my favorite JCVD film. But this is one movie that could be re-made with a few different twists and still be pretty good.

Timecop is the only JCVD movie I actually liked. I liked the reboot for Total Recall more than the original and I hope for the same here.

Hope when it gets its home video release we can buy a 3 pack of it for $18 cause $9.98 for 1 copy is just sooo wrong!!

What about 'No Retreat No Surrender'? Lol that was the very first thing I ever saw him in. Pure 80s cheese! Also, did anyone else know he was the original actor to play the Predator? BEFORE Kevin Peter Hall replaced him? Fun fact, unless I'm wrong lol

Ok, I double checked and yep, he was the Predator for two whole days and then he quit bc he didn't want to be an uncredited special effect. And then he went on to become a CREDITED special effect.

BTW, Cyborg, Bloodsport and Timecop are my fav Van Damme films. Although, w Timecop, I never could get over the fact that *spoiler* he goes back in time to save his wife at the end, the house still blows up. And then we fast forward to his present(future) and the house is perfect. I hate screaming-in-your-face continuity issues.

Idgi. Why is that they keep rebooting forgotten 80's/90's shit that no one wants to see instead of still somewhat relevant franchises like Street Fighter that NEED to be rebooted?

I saw the original movie for the first time last year, and I can definitely say this--is a reboot necessary?

Timecop is one of the better jcvd movies. It had its problems.

I'm with nails.... An excellent concept....Looper tried it but it left me cold. Time travel films should mess with your head. In this instance I always hated that silly rule that touching a future or past version of yourself reverted to you becoming a protoplasmic puddle in order to avoid the paradox.
There is no paradox...if time travel is possible, all possible outcomes exist as our reality. I thought time cop was cool because be fought against that REALity.(Don't get me started on Back to the Future part III)

A very underrated popcorn action movie. I remember thoroughly enjoying this film when I first saw it in the theater. Not high art, but good old-school action flick with a great villain (Ron Silver).

The first one had JCVD, Mia Sara, and Bruce McGill(Jack Dalton). Needless to say, this is another unnecessary reboot to me.

I just noticed the actor in that top gif(Jason Schombing) starred on MacGyver too(Tough Boys episode). Small world.

Bloodsport is my favorite JCVD movie. Other JCVD movies I'm a fan of:

-Kickboxer
-Timecop
-Sudden Death
-Knock Off
-Lionheart
-Double Impact
-Hard Target
-Universal Soldier
ComicBookFanatic
ComicBookFanatic - 5/22/2013, 11:07 PM
Really liked only two JCVD films - Bloodsport and the first Universal Soldier movie. THe others are just too cheesy for my taste, though I enjoyed Double Impact.
If they have to reboot I would prefer Bloodsport was polished up with top notch action stars of the present generation (Ray Park? Seems to enjoy a huge fan following).
@Façade I prefer the older Total Recall, although undoubtedly the effects of the reboot were much better (not surprising, that). But I don't think you can beat Arnie mouthing immortal lines like "Bring your ass to Mars" or "See you at the paarthy Richtha!" ;-)
@Jobin That's one hell of a team! They should leave Predator untouched. But if they could bring all those actors together, that would be like Expendables with curennt action actors - a real mouth watering prospect! I know, but a guy can dream!!
