WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES Set To Arrive On Digital HD & Blu-ray Next Month; Special Features Revealed

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced the release date for the upcoming 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, DVD, & Digital HD release of Matt Reeves' critically acclaimed War for the Planet of the Apes!

Despite widespread critical acclaim and an outstanding audience reception, 20th Century Fox's War for the Planet of the Apes wasn't exactly the box office juggernaut many were expecting and to date, has earned just over $365.5 million worldwide on a $150 million budget, which is well behind the $710.6 million Dawn of the Planet of the Apes collected in 2014 and the $481.8 million Rise of the Planet of the Apes collected in 2011.

Now, while some of this heavy drop can likely be attributed to Marvel/Sony's Spider-Man: Homecoming, which opened just a week prior to a similar positive reception, the rest is harder to explain. Several box office analysts have pointed to the film's much bleaker tone and lengthier runtime as possible reasons for the dip.

On a lighter note, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment officially announced yesterday that the Matt Reeves-directed film will arrive on Digital HD on October 10 and then 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, 3D Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD on October 24. Special features will include ten deleted scenes, six behind-the-scenes featurettes - including an in-depth making of documentary - a concept art gallery, and an audio commentary from the director.

Really they [frick]ed up box art and made it not his face like the other 2 so that now its gonna stick out in my collection -_- oh well the movie was incredible I might just get the trilogy set to appease my OCD

I was expecting more of a war movie. Still turned out extremely well, and my favorite trilogy in the last decade.

Considering how little good competition there was this summer it's hard to explain this movie's incredibly disappointing box office.

@TheUnworthyThor - Um the film was in the middle of Dunkirk, Spider-Man, etc.

That's some pretty big competition.

@TheUnworthyThor - Are you joking? There was a ton of competition thats why no movie really broke out this year. Ive gone to the movies more this year than any other i can remember
TheUnworthyThor
TheUnworthyThor - 9/8/2017, 6:28 AM
@NoMeaning45 - That's pretty standard summer competition, Dunkirk only opened to 50 million, and there hasn't been anything of note since those movies and whereas Spider-man, Dunkirk and Wonder Woman could take advantage of that fact while Apes wasn't able to.

I'm not hating on the movie, I loved it, but for some reason audiences just weren't into it despite the great reviews and how much the previous movie made and how well it had been received.

@Ha1frican - Really? Which big successful movies have come out since Apes that killed it's box office? Valerian? Atomic Blonde? Dark Tower? Movies have to face stiffer competition most years.

War did not make HALF of what Dawn made because of The Mummy and Transformers: The Last Knight.

@TheUnworthyThor - You missed my point. Every movie underperformed this year because there was so much out. There were no juggernaut blockbusters because like 8 movies came out in the span of 3 months and most people dont go to the movies that often
TheUnworthyThor
TheUnworthyThor - 9/8/2017, 7:13 AM
@Ha1frican - But that doesn't add up. Because a) that's the way it's been for years and b) that would mean every movie was splitting the same pie, but box office was way down this summer, meaning their literally was less competition this summer. People didn't say "oh man there are five movies I want to see so I'll just see none." They just didn't feel moved to see anything.

And the argument would hold a lot more water if Apes had released in May or June, but it came out in July, and it has been a ghost town since, just a bunch of nothingness that made no money for six weeks.

Ha1frican - 9/8/2017, 7:34 AM
@TheUnworthyThor - yeah bc alot came out earlier in the year that people had already seen and I said before most people dont go to the movie that often. Look at the movies released since January-> John Wick 2, Lego Batman, Kong: Skull Island, Beauty and the Beast, Power Rangers, GHost in the Shell, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Alien: Covenant, Pirates of the Carribean 5, Wonder Woman, The Mummy. Now thats just the studio films until June 9th so most people would have spent money on at least 2 of those and been good for the next few months but lets keep going--> Cars 3, Transformers: The Last Knight, Baby Driver, Despicable me 3, Spiderman: Homecoming (now we're in July and most people have been completely burned out on movies already), PLANET OF THE APES, Dunkirk, Valerian, Atomic Blonde, The Dark Tower (now we're out of July but its still doesnt stop) Annabelle: Creation, Hitman's Bodyguard, and today IT drops. This year has been unprecedented with movies and its extremely overwhelming for someone like me who is as passionate about movies as i am I can only imagine how disorienting and of putting it is to someone who cares half as much. Most people need movies to be an event and with this many options most of them being at least good it dilutes everything and makes people now interested in even going in the first place when in 6 months they can just stream half of it on their couch, THeater fatigue is a real thing

The film had more in line with The Great Escape and a Holocaust/Internment film than a War Picture. Perhaps leading to the drop. Also, the scope was much smaller than anticipated.

Return of The Jedi - the ultimate battle
Return of the King - epic ultimate battle
The Dark Knight Rises - Whole wide city battle

When you title a film WAR for a Planet...that puts certain expectations on the film.

1.) A War
2.) A Scope that feels more Global in nature.

Instead the film was much more condensed and focused.

Unless you want me to work and say WAR was actually Ceasers war within himself.

@IronGenesis - I had the exact opposite reaction. I thought it felt more like a real war film than it had any right to. And I think it's pretty telling that your examples of good war movies are Star Wars (a series that has gotten by with having "War" in the title and not feeling like war at least 7 times), Lord of the Rings and Batman which are all action/adventure films. Many real war films are relatively small in scope and this movie has surprisingly more in common with them, at least tonally. It wasn't glamorized. The horrors of war rather than big, dumb epic battles is what they were going for. And I thought they mostly nailed. I had a lot of issues with this movie, I was actually pretty disappointed after building it up so much, but this wasn't one of them.

Question is should I get a Blu Ray Pack or the whole trilogy?

Depends on how much money I have because I'm currently keeping money aside for a Nintendo Switch and who knows when I'll be able to find that. Decisions, decisions...

"War" is outstanding - a masterpiece on so many levels. I don't care if it underperformed...
