This is a very different type of film. It practically appeals to everything Geek Culture. Comic Books, Anime (I'll be honest I hate Anime with a passion), Video Games, and various other geek aspects. I've read tons of reviews of People trying to compare it to other Comic films like Kick Ass and Jonah Hex and I just gotta say. You can't really compare them. Maybe Kick-Ass in terms of celebrating the Comic book loving sub culture.
This film is all about growing up and living in the now and finding your place at the time. I know that doesn't seem right in a film about a guy Fighting Seven evil ex's but it is. Scott is basically a shallow idiot. but with redeeming qualities He can't quite make up his mind and often times hurts people more than helping them. It really isn't until Ramona breaks up with him that he kind of realizes what he has done to others.
This film visually is amazing. While I have yet to Inception, I think it is the most visually appealing film I've seen all year, although I hope Tron can match this. The writing is Hilarious with only a few joke falling flay. The fight scenes are amazing and very different and I think with a different director this could have become very repetitive.
The Casting is top notch and I'll admit I actually don't find Michael Cera annoying in this or in general. In fact this is the most charismatic he's ever been. Many critics have said that you really need to be a gamer to enjoy this but I disagree. I own an Xbox and have five games. (I suck, I know.) but I was able to get most of these gags through pop cultural osmosis. If you aren't a gamer and don't get it don't think of it as "oh gee I gotta know what that means." It will help but in the middle of the film, I would enjoy them as simple non sequesters.
The Soundtrack is one of the best Soundtracks of the year. I bought the Soundtrack and the Score which is something I rarely do. Beck's songwriter is top notch and you can tell he brought his A-game. Many fans are going to be disappointed with certain things left out, but Hey its a movie things have to be changed and the Ending is less complex than the book. The movie ended shooting before the final book so all you purist don't get your knickers in a twist (always wanted to say that and I'm not British)
Overall I give this a 4.5 out of 5 simply because the opening is a little slow and some jokes do fall but I can definitely see this on my top ten of the year. but then again it might be a top 5 judging by the quality of films this year.
On a side note I have complete faith in Edgar Wright (who is truly the star of this film) in making his Ant-Man film and will be there opening day.
See ya.
