Good news for Scott Pilgrim fans, as a new anime series based on the mega-popular Oni Press comic books by Bryan Lee O'Malley is in the works for Netflix.

The project will be produced by UCP, with creator Lee O’Malley on board as writer and and executive producer along with BenDavid Grabinski. The pair will also serve as co-showrunners. The animation will be handled by Science SARU, while Abel Gongora will direct.

Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Baby Driver) adapted the graphic novel series as a live-action movie called Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (the name of the second volume) back in 2010, with Michael Cera starring as Scott and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Ramona. The film, which also starred Jason Schwartzman, Kieran Culkin, Chris Evans, Anna Kendrick, Allison Pill, and Brandon Routh, bob-ombed (sorry) when it was released, but has since gone on to achieve cult status.

Wright will also executive produce the anime alongside Nira Park, Marc Platt, Jared LeBoff, and Adam Seigel of Marc Platt Productions.

The comic followed the titular slacker, who plays in a garage band called Sex Bob-omb, as he falls in love with a girl named Ramona Flowers. Before they can embark on a relationship, Pilgrim must do battle with Ramona's seven evil ex boyfriends.

Is every American cartoon not aimed at kids, but also not a raunchy comedy going to be called "anime" now?

Anime is mainstream now. For someone who loved it when it was small potatoes, it’s kind of weird to see it everywhere now.

Enjoyed Scott Pilgrim but Netflix is hit and miss with anime though.

Supercrooks is dope though

@BlackBeltJones - our Gen was cooler than we thought. Introducing our kids to 90’s rock, rap, and cartoons, even they can see it. The 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, and yes now 90’s, have personality. 2000’s and 2010’s crap ain’t Gon stick.

@TheWalkingCuban - it must suck to be a kid now. And kids now are little shits too lol.

They’ll never know the joy of having actually amazing cartoons. Kids these days watch twitch instead of cartoon network Saturday mornings. Because of this they don’t really produce cartoons like they used to either imo. I love some of todays anime but there was something about watching Yu Yu hakusho on adult swim at 1 in the morning that hit different. I think now there’s more quantity than quality with anime.

@BlackBeltJones - that’s for certain. I come from the Nickelodeon days, Rocko’s modern life, hey Arnold, ten and stimpy, which also came on mtv where I watched beavis and butthead. But in the 80’s I stayed up and watched USA Up All Night, definitely not for kids. But when I discovered Akira I was shocked at how visceral and beautifully drawn it was

@BlackBeltJones - Right, and even then companies don't let creators go full on with ideas. If kids aint gonma watch your show at least let the creators do a product they're proud of and don't interfere. Also, Yu Yu Hakusho is underrated, that along with Inuyasha and zatch Bell were the shit back then

@marvel72 - it’s cool. It’s nothing great story wise or writing wise but the animation is really distinct and well done

I'm interested, but I kinda want them to not so the evil Exs story. Idk anything about the comic, or if this IP has more stories beyond the one. But I think I'd be way more interested if this takes place afterwards and is completely new and different, maybe referencing the evil exs thing time to time... but if this is just an animated version of the evil exs story, I'm likely to pass on this.

I wonder if they’re going to re do the comic. I’d be fine with that or a new story, I always felt the movie was rushed and the two leads are miscast. An animated adaptation would work better for sure

I kinda feel the same way about Harry Potter tbh
